Amphetamine is a synthetic drug originally developed (and still used) as a diet suppressant. It is also used recreationally and for performance enhancement.
Effects
Causes excitement, racing mind and increases energy. Also causes anxiety. The after effects include tiredness and lethargy.
Long term use strains the heart and can lead to mental illness.
Recreational use
Street names include speed, whiz, billy
Is one of the most impure drugs available on the street as it is a white powder and can be cut with almost anything.
Usually cut with glucose to over come its bitter taste but can be cut with any white powder (e.g. washing powder, Ajax powder, etc.).
Its pure form (known as base) can cause serious damage to the user if they are not aware of its purity.
Often mixed with Ecstasy (either taken as a adjunct or in the pills themselves) and occasionally cannabis (turbo spliffs) to counter the drowsy effects.
Performace Enhancing Use

The Law
Most jurisdictions classify amphetamine and derivatives such as methamphetamine as controlled substances but allow licensed physicians to prescribe them for certain conditions.
