Pioline was particularly noted for his topspin backhand. He is one of only a few players to have reached the top ten in the ATP rankings without ever winning a tournament (along with Marcos Baghdatis in 2006). Pioline was ranked as high as World No. 5 in 2000.
After retiring from tennis, Pioline became a tennis administrator. Currently, he is the tournament director of the ATP Masters Series event in Paris and plays on the senior ATP tour.
