WWE Legends of WrestleMania will be a video game based on legends and alumni of the professional wrestling promotion, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), who have appeared at WrestleMania in the 1980s and 1990s. It will be released in March 2009 to coincide with WrestleMania XXV. The game is being developed by YUKE's Future Media Creators and will be published by THQ, the same developer and publisher for the WWE SmackDown video game series.
Production of the video game was announced in May 2008 by THQ, respectively for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 video game consoles. A trailer for the game was released the following month at E3, featuring a recreation of the Hulk Hogan versus André the Giant main event at WrestleMania III.
Gameplay
Match gameplay
The game promotes a new combo fighting system that is grapple-based. Unlike the SmackDown series, Legends of WrestleMania is focused more on arcade-style gameplay (similar to WWF WrestleFest) with only the D-pad (or left analog stick) and the four face buttons needed on the gamepad. During play, the player's HUD will feature a health bar and a number between one and three. After successful chains of attacks, the number will increase with more devastating moves now available. After completing the third level of moves, the wrestler's finishing move can then be performed. Continuous chains of moves are performed by pressing a button allocated by the screen before the player's opponent can. If the opponent beats the player at this, then the move is blocked and the chain is broken. Each wrestler will have five taunts, which will either increase their health meter or their speed, among others. In addition, when a wrestler is being pinned, a meter will show up that determines how likely it is for the opponent to kick out of the pin. Unlike the WWE SmackDown games, a submission meter is the only indication to specific damaged body parts, unlike a body model located in the HUD.
Managers and valets will play a significant part of the game, and will interfere on behalf of their clients. Features similar to the SmackDown series such as create-a-legend mode and online gameplay will also be featured in the game. It has been noted that each move in the game will have a brand new animation and are not recycled from moves featured in the SmackDown series. A new mode featured is the WrestleMania Tour where classic WrestleMania matches can be recreated with classic WWE footage included to introduce the bout. The game will include a feature to import characters from WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009.
Game modes
The game will feature three modes: Relive, Rewrite, and Redefine. In Relive, the player will be able to play as a legend that won a match over a certain wrestler. Rewrite will allow the player to play as the loser of a certain historic match in order to "rewrite" history. The player in this mode will be able to watch a recap of the history of certain wrestlers, a recap of their feud, and a recap of their match at WrestleMania. In this mode, the player has to complete certain objectives, besides winning the match. In Redefine, the player will be able to choose any wrestler to play as and the ability to change the match type; as of January 2009, the steel cage match is the only match type announced and as of February 5, 2009, ladder match will also be playable..
Roster
According to IGN, several of the game's wrestlers have been heavily modified; Hulk Hogan's size was increased, while André the Giant's size was decreased, which contradicts their actual appearances during their WrestleMania era. On the Royal Rumble 2009 pay-per-view broadcast, an advertisement aired with shots of The Ultimate Warrior and Roddy Piper. Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart both feature in UK advertisements for WWE programming on Sky Sports. In March, WWE.com will air videos of past WrestleMania events involving superstars in the video game.
Beginning in February 2009, WWE released names of wrestlers who would be included in the roster, which confirmed the appearances of Hogan, André the Giant, and Stone Cold Steve Austin, the wrestlers featured on the game cover.
