Prospective new entrants

Ecclestone reportedly said that 26 cars would be on the grid at the start of the season.

Whilst preparations were being made by the current teams for the 2009 season, rumours from America circulated that a group led by designer Ken Anderson and former Williams employee Peter Windsor was to form a new independent Formula One team with an intention to enter the championship in 2010. The project was entitled USF1, but had to change due to Bernie Ecclestone ownership of the term F1. US Grand Prix Engineering's website still shows a "Coming soon" message. If they do enter they have suggested that they will use engines that mark the return of Cosworth to Formula One.

Calendar changes

• After weeks of rumours regarding Bernie Ecclestone discussing plans to hold the British Grand Prix at Donington Park from 2010, this was finally confirmed by the FIA on July 4 2008.
• On September 7 2008, before the 2008 Belgian Grand Prix, Bernie Ecclestone talked with team principals about the very likely return of the United States Grand Prix for 2010.

If the calendar holds nineteen Grands Prix as expected, this will tie the 2005 season for the most races until 2011, when twenty races will be held.

Rule changes

• Refueling is to be banned for the first time since 1993.
• Tyre warmers are to be banned.
• The scoring system where by the driver with the most wins (as opposed to most accumulated points) becomes world champion was due to be introduced for the 2009 season, however the FIA breached its own rules introducing the scoring system. As it was introduced within 20 days of the first race all teams were required to agree to the changes, however not one team supported the changes. As a result, scoring system changes are to be deferred until 2010.
• Bernie Ecclestone has said the new scoring system he is championing will definitely be introduced for 2010.

Sponsorship changes

• ING have confirmed it will terminate its sponsorship with the Renault F1 Team along with its contract of being the title sponsor of the Australian, Hungarian and Belgian Grands Prix after 2009. The company has blamed the global economic crisis as the cause.

Speculated 2010 race schedule

In January 2009, the Portuguese magazine Autosport reported the possible return of Formula 1 to Portugal, at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in 2010 or 2011. Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has also visited the Portimão circuit. He is concerned as to how many European races the sport will have in future, and doubts that other European countries can maintain their races. So, it's possible the Portuguese Grand Prix will return in 2010.

Argentina is another potential candidate for a race in 2010. Argentina will celebrate its bicentennial and the government is pursing the chance of having a Grand Prix in Mar del Plata.
