Hey Brion

NGerda here. I just discovered this anon IP site, and you should probably be aware of it. I am making an edit with it right now. If you see this, then Wikimedia allowed the edit to go through, and we should probably figure out how to auto block it. The string I'm your user talk page is here . Try it out. If you can't autoblock it, I can try to grab a good chunk of the IPs it uses. Sincerely, NGerda 03:18, 10 September 2005 (UTC), operating under anon IP of 85.195.119.22

Thank you very much for dealing with this loophole in such an expedient, efficient, and thorough manner. I'm sure you've already thwarted hundreds of anon IP vandalism attempts. Great work. -- NGerda 03:12, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

Customizing Mediawiki:Copyrightwarning list of characters

Hello,

I think I may have mentioned this earlier, but is there some way to customize the characters that appear in Mediawiki:Copyrightwarning, so that a user can choose to have Cyrillic, Greek, IPA, etc. ?

I don't think CSS can do this... CSS can make the entire list go away by setting

editpage-specialchars { display: none; }

but I don't think it can be used to customize the list of characters (otherwise, the list would be specified within CSS rather than being specified on the Mediawiki:Copyrightwarning page, no?).

Perhaps a future Mediawiki enhancement would allow this to be specified in Special:Preferences?

-- Curps 16:16, 14 September 2005 (UTC)

In theory you could rewrite the whole section with some custom JavaScript in your /monobook.js subpage (or GreaseMonkey or similar browser plugin). That's kinda ugly though maybe. :) --Brion 00:25, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
Actually User:Func has gone and done just that, as of today. See his talk page. I've copied the result (for IPA) into User:Curps/monobook.js. It's fairly short and not too ugly at all. It might still be neat to have it within Mediawiki itself, so that any page that contained Arabic characters for instance would automatically offer Arabic characters at the bottom of the screen. And Func's work may be browser-dependent... it works on IE at least. -- Curps 01:08, 16 September 2005 (UTC)

Brion VIBBER day

http://mail.wikipedia.org/pipermail/wikien-l/2004-June/013075.html I just found that while looking through some Wik stuff. I was gonna paste it on your user page, but then I realized that would make it appear as though you had a big head. Still felt like showing you it, even though I know you've seen it. ;) Redwolf24 (talk) 00:43, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

User login statistics

I run a genealogy wiki for my family, using the Mediawiki software. It is password protected, and I would love to be able to track user login statistics, such as who logs in and when. I have so far been unable to find any info on this anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated - thank you!

User:Alex Ramon

There's no built-in recording of logins, you would have to write it yourself. --Brion 03:45, 16 September 2005 (UTC)

How to and just if...

Hi!I'm de:Benutzer:Abzt And would like to know how to get interwiki-developer and if you have to be sysop to get one.

I'm not sure what that is... --Brion 23:35, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

Abzt

Hi, "Interwiki-Developers" are people who create Misplaced Pages's interface and "sysops" is another word for Administrators.Abzt 18:19, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

If you are talking about the ability to edit the pages on the MediaWiki: namespace, that capability is restricted to sysops on Misplaced Pages. --cesarb 19:39, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

Unicode-garbling text-mode browsers

Hi,

Can we quickly add Lynx and other text browsers to the list of browsers that need special handling by Mediawiki to avoid garbling of Unicode characters? I'm still seeing a number of Unicode-garbling edits, for instance: and .

As an alternative, would it be possible to handle this with a test at login time? We could add a small edit window or text field to the login screen (maybe with "hidden" attribute set) that would be pre-populated with literal Unicode characters. If those characters come back garbled, then flag that information (either in a cookie, or ideally it could be incorporated into the wpEditToken itself).

Apparently, I can do the impossible.

According to this diff, my 'bot renamed a page and modified its contents in a single edit. As far as I know, this is impossible. Am I doing the impossible? Or has this article lost some of its history between the edit done by my 'bot and the edit from 2005-02-08? Uncle G 23:48, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

Has Autoblock ever displayed a blocked registered user's IP address?

Hi Brion. This concerns an ArbCom case that I'm gathering evidence for. A user claims that he was able to view the IP address of blocked registered users by clicking on the autoblock link in the block log. Has this ever been the case? I wasn't able to find any record of this bug in Bugzilla. This user has only be around since early July, so that's time period I'm mostly concerned about. He claims that the bug has now been fixed. I'd also like to know whether any user (other than developers or David Gerard) could have knowledge of registered users' IP addresses through any technical means. Thank you! Carbonite | Talk 03:51, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

I'm not aware of such a bug offhand. There was briefly an information disclosure issue with the blocklist search feature in that searches would match on the autoblocked IP; if you went to a lot of trouble in theory you could have tried to reconstruct an IP through a lot of directed searches during the half-day that was in place. Can you provide more information about this "clicking"? --Brion 05:40, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
When a user is autoblocked, Special:Ipblocklist currently has a log entry similar to "11:59, 8 October 2005, AdminX blocked #42545 (expires 11:59, 9 October 2005) (unblock) (Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "TrollX". The reason given for Trollxblock is: "spam troll, vandalism" Clicking on the #42545 gives a "Bad Title" error. Did this ever provide the IP of the blocked user?
The user in question claims: "The blocklist used to show IP numbers when the user tried to edit and the autoblock was enabled. It would say 141.76.1.121 has been autoblocked because it was recently used by soandso. Recently, that bug was fixed and you only see a number, but for a while Administrators used this bug to get IP numbers by blocking a person and waiting for them to try to edit." Again, this only concerns bugs that would have been fixed in the past few months, so don't worry about any from years ago.
It's my belief that this user is incorrect and he actually gained knowledge of the IP addresses through other (non-teachnical) means. I just wanted a developer to confirm that autoblock did not provide IP addresses. Thanks! Carbonite | Talk 14:27, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
I don't understand what this is trying to refer to. Is he talking about the message that's displayed to the person who is blocked? Or the log? Or... ? --Brion 00:30, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
I really don't understand exactly what's he referring to either. The only other comments he made was "I got the IP numbers from the block list. At one time, the IPs of many of the people that Jayjg and SlimVirgin banned (under the guise of being my sockpuppets) were on the block list"
Basically the user claims that he was able to identify the IP address of registered users that had been blocked (somehow using an autoblock bug). He says that he then used the IP to determine the user's location and whether they were editing from an open proxy. As far as I can tell, it would have been impossible for him to determine the IP from autoblock. I strongly believe that he already knew the IP addresses and made up this autoblock bug. Blocking policy proposal

Hi Brion, we are trying to form a new blocking policy, and as it has technical implications for Misplaced Pages and the software, your opinions would be greatly valued, see Misplaced Pages:Blocking policy proposal. thanks - Martin 09:51, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

Jimbo Wales to Attend San Diego Meetup on October 18 2005

Hello, Jimbo Wales will be in San Diego to attend OOPSLA and has agreed to come by and visit with the San Diego wikipedians. If you are interested, you will find more info on my talk page. Johntex\ 00:54, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

Details on the Meetup

I went to the Town and Country area last night to check out restaurants. I've eaten at the restaurants in Town and Country and they weren't that great, ao I wanted to find us somewhere nearby. There is a nice but expensive steak house down the street, but I don't know what everyone's budget is. I picked this place, I hope it is OK with everyone:

  • 7:00pm Tuesday October 18th
  • 24-Hour Valley Kitchen Family Restaurant
  • 875 Hotel Circle South, Mission Valley, 619-819-1017 or 619-298-8282.
  • It is right across Highway 8 from the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center
  • It is very casual and comes highly recommended by the hotel desk. Entrees are $8-$15. They have a wide menu: They have breakfast all-days, salads, burgers, steaks, echilladas, pies, that sort of place.

See you there! Johntex\ 01:33, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

Thanks

Image:USC Bovard Auditorium.jpg has been listed for deletion

An image or media file that you uploaded, Image:USC Bovard Auditorium.jpg, has been listed at Misplaced Pages:Images and media for deletion. Please look there to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.

There is no explanation for its having been listed, and so I'm removing it from such list. The photograph was taken by me and I released it and marked it with a source (me) and license (GFDL), and it has had a {{GFDL}} marker tag on the page for some time. --Brion 00:24, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

Renameuser

Hi Brion,

Special:Renameuser is disabled. Do you have any news about it ? thank you

English Names

At talk:Christopher Columbus you said:

A certain overcelebrated washed-up Genoese entrepreneur of low moral fiber is known in English as Christopher Columbus. A certain 1st-century Jewish rabble rouser is known in English as Jesus. A certain 20th-century American politician is known as Jimmy Carter despite technically being James Earl Carter...

etc. I rather liked this rant, and I've been trying to make more-or-less the same point at Talk:Horchata, with limited success. Any chance you could take a look at that debate and add youe 2¢ (whether or not you actually do agree with me—I'd like to see more opinions there, period.) Thanks, Iustinus 08:40, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

User:Username Glitch

How are these even possible: When I try to do similar in the login page, it fails. Blocking at Special:Blockip also encounters a small glitch... try it. -- Curps 02:47, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

That should no longer be possible, it'll now check for extra namespaces on the front of usernames. (You had to put on a couple extra to get through the login page.) --Brion 07:58, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

catalogofcasinos.com

Brion, I don't know where else to report this, so I'm placing it here: that site apparently pulls its images directly from our image servers, see e.g. . It's also a non-compliant mirror. Lupo 10:39, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

Image loading

Hey Brion! <look up> Seems like you're pretty popular around here! </look up>  :)

It seems as though Misplaced Pages and Wikimedia Commons images have been loading very slowly lately. Just thought I'd let you know in case you weren't aware. Keep up the great wiki work from the land-down-under! -- NGerda 02:43, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

We know. The new server is getting put in place bit by bit. --Brion 04:46, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

Article Validation

I noticed the Article Validation feature is about to go live. You may want to check out the Wiki Sort Project. It's goal is to use a rating system/article validation to automatically select articles for Misplaced Pages 1.0. It contains some good ideas that you may not have thought of. Anyhow, I am very interested in this feature, so if you could tell me anything and everything about it, or give me some links, that would be great. Oh, and happy thanksgiving!the1physicist 16:20, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

bi-di category listing change and Safari

Hi - If you get a chance, can you please take a look at Misplaced Pages:Village pump (assistance)#Design changes? Disappearing ".7C" signs in category sections when using Safari? Thanks. -- Rick Block (talk) 16:46, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

It works fine on the current version of Safari, please upgrade. --Brion 02:51, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

Bringing my old edits home...

Greetings, wise and mighty developer! I have been told that one such as yourself may know a way to merge my anonymous contributions into my existing edit contribution history... I've confirmed over fifty anon edits of mine primarily by identifying articles that I started, beginning with this cluster of edits, as well as this fairly large cluster, and including these three, these five, these two, these five, these two, this one, this one, and finally these ten that I logged as Bdabramson. I would be most grateful if you could light the path to inclusion of these edits so as to make whole my record here. Cheers! BDAbramson T 02:06, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

Should be possible to do that with Special:Renameuser, unless that fix didn't get made. There should be a page somewhere about this system and who's running the requests. --Brion 02:48, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
Hmmmm... couldn't get access to a page under that name - perhaps as I'm not an admin. I'll run that by a bureaucrat, tho. Thanks! BDAbramson T 03:37, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
Ignore the above - per Misplaced Pages:Changing attribution for an edit this requires a developer - but there appears to be quite a backlog! I thought I had seen somewhere that this was suspended, but recently unsuspended - I'd do it myself if I could become a developer. BDAbramson T 03:49, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
