Dr. Arye Carmon (born 1943) is the current President of the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI). He has founded the Institute in 1991 along with American businessman Bernard Marcus, as an independent think tank dedicated to promoting and strengthening democracy and democratic values in Israel.
Arye Carmon was born in Jerusalem and received a B.A. in History and Philosophy and an M.A. in History from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He went on to earn a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin with a major in European History and a minor in Educational Policy Studies. Since then he has taught at prestigious institutes around the world including Max Planck Institut in Germany, UCLA in the United States, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel, where he also teaches at the School of Public Policy.
