Prem Chand Pandey is Emeritus Professor at IIT Kharagpur and First Director of National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean ResearchNCAOR Goa, Formerly known as Antarctic Study Centre. He joined the scientific centre at Pune as scientific officer after teaching few months at Dayanand Anglo Vedic PG college Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. He was selected in Space Application Centre SAC/ISRO and given his service from scientific officer post to Head of the Meteorology and Oceanography Divison-MOG until joining as First Director of NCAOR Goa in 1997. Dr. Prem Chand Pandey joined IIT Kharagpur in 2005 December as visiting Professor after that he became life-long Emeritus Professor in Centre for Ocean, River, Land and Atmosphere Sciences(CORAL) IIT Kharagpur, he is giving his service to IIT Kharagpur and guidance to student till date. Dr. Prem Chand Pandey is well known by his name Dr. P C Pandey among SAC/ISRO, NCAOR , IIT Kharagpur and others.
Education and Research
He got his D.Phil in Science (Solid state (electronics)) degree from Allahabad University, Allahabad in 1972 and also Master and Bachelor in Solid-state physics and science respectively from Allahabad University. He specialised in microwave remote sensing of the Earth, Atmosphere and Ocean system, Sea-ice, Polar Remote Sensing and played a key role in analysing data from ISRO's first satellite, Bhaskara, and also in the planning of ISRO's past and future mission such as OCEANSAT-and CLIMATESAT-(Ocean Satellite and Climate Satellite). Dr. Pandey has made significant contribution to the development of the technique of microwave remote sensing from satellite for obtaining atmosphere and ocean surface parameters. His concept of combining microwave with infrared derive cloud paramaters has been widely acclaimed. He produced near about one dozen Ph.D Students from SAC/ISRO, NCAOR and IIT Kharagpur who were enrolled in Gujrat University, Goa University and IIT Kharagpur. He is known as specialist of Satellite-Meteorology; Oceanography and Polar science, Atmospherc Science, Antarctic and Climate Change and Sea-ice in India and is referee of many International Journals.
Book and Publication
His recent popular books are India in the Antarctic: Scientific and Geopolitical Perspectives, and Advances-in-marine-and-Antarctic-science . And other some old books near about other eight books in which he is author, co-author and editor of Polar Science, his first book was published when he was at NASA . He is Associate Editors:Marine Geodesy, in Editorial Board: Journal of the Indian Society of Remote Sensing , Editorial Board:Indian Journal of Radio & Space Physics (IJRSP) and Mausam. Dr. Pandey's special co-operation in CORALs Department of IIT Kharagpur, is involved in all sponsored project taken by CORALs IIT Khargpur as Co-PI. of Projects. Dr. Pandey is author and co-authour of more than two hundred of papers in International and National journals with specially in area of Polar Remote Sensing, Sea-Ice and oceanography.
Achievement: Academic and Sciencific
Dr. Pandey was honoured by SSB Prize of CSIR, NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal, USA; Sri Hari Om Ashram Prerit Vikram Sarabhai Memorial Research Award, and Vigyan Ratna Samman by Uttar Predesh Govt. In the last phase of his life, he actively participated in growing the new centres in which excelent one NCAOR based and funded till date KBCAOS in AllahabadUniversity Allahabad and CORAL IIT Kharagpur. Due to his best work in polar science specially Polar Remote Sensing from the SAC/ISRO he switched as First Director of NCAOR. Pandey taken as challenge and done his best service in primary development of NCAOR Goa since 1997 to 2005 December. He got success to give the present shape to KBCAOS/IIDS(UoA)] , and CORAL, IIT Kharagpur. He is Fellow of National Academy of Science India, Allahabad, and Indian Academy of Science Bangalore and Indian Meteorological Society. Dr. Pandey is member of Indian Institute of Tropical MeteorologyGoverning Council and advisory committee NIO, Goa .
