Polish director born August 18 1933 to Jewish parents; Polanski's mother died in a concentration camp but Polanski avoided incarceration there and spent the war wandering the countryside of Europe. Polanski was married to actress Sharon Tate, who was killed by Charles Manson while eight months pregnant; Polanski was later involved in a scandal surrounding statutory rape charges and fled the United States; he returned later to face the charges, was convicted, and fled again. Polanski now spends his time in France and Poland, and continues to direct movies and theater and act in films.
