Doris Grau (October 12, 1924 - December 30, 1995) was an American actress, script supervisor and voice artist, perhaps most famous for her work in later life on The Simpsons, where she provided the voice for Lunchlady Doris and other characters.
Grau worked as a script supervisor on many films and TV shows including The Tracey Ullman Show and The Simpsons from 1989. She reitred after three years to take up acting.
Grau played gravel-voiced, chain smoking women on TV shows like The Simpsons and The Critic. She also had a few guest appearances on The Tracey Ullman Show and provided additional voices for the movie Babe (1995). Grau appeared on camera in The Distinguished Gentleman (1992).
She is perhaps best known for her portrayal of Springfield Elementary School cafeteria worker Lunchlady Doris, on the animated series The Simpsons, as well as Doris in The Critic. She also had a recurring role as The Hungry Heifer waitress Corrinne on Cheers.
She died from emphysema on December 30, 1995. The characters she voiced were retired out of respect (similar to the retirement of Phil Hartman's characters), with the exception of Lunchlady Doris, who returned to The Simpsons after a decade-long absence in 2006 (voiced by Tress MacNeille) in Season 18.
