Revision as of 22:37, 20 April 2004
For real-time chat with other Wikipedians, as well as live recent changes, there are several Internet Relay Chat (IRC) channels, located on the Freenode network (irc.freenode.net) — irc://irc.freenode.net/wikipedia is the main forum. If you don't use IRC, there is a jabber chatroom at en.wiki@muc.jabber.org.
Channels
Discussion
Several IRC channels are available for general discussions:
- #wikipedia for general discussion
- #mediawiki for discussion of the MediaWiki software
- #mediation.wikipedia to assist with the Misplaced Pages:mediation process
- #ama.wikipedia for discussions with the Association of Members' Advocates
- #wiki (a less active channel about wikis in general)
Channels in non-English languages are available too:
- #ar.wikipedia
- #de.wikipedia
- #es.wikipedia
- #fi.wikipedia
- #fr.wikipedia
- #ja.wikipedia
- #nl.wikipedia
- #sq.wikipedia (probably empty, but registered)
- #sv.wikipedia
Recent Changes
Edits are reported live for four language versions of Misplaced Pages:
Differences with recent changes web pages:
- IRC gives edits one by one automatically as they happen, Recent Changes shows the batch of latest changes when one asks
- the time is not listed (but timestamping may be provided by the IRC-client)
- the URL (depending on the IRC-client, a link) is provided to a webpage showing the cumulative differences produced by the edit concerned and any subsequent edits; Recent Changes provides more links
- IRC gives all edits, for Recent Changes preferences can be set to hide minor edits. Also bot edits are shown on IRC, but Recent Changes only does so with an extra request
- past edits, made before one starts up IRC, can not be shown
- bolding watched pages is not applicable on IRC (but the IRC client may have a similar feature)
- the additional features of Enhanced Recent Changes are not applicable on IRC
Confirmation that an edit has been processed is typically faster through IRC than through the browser.
How to connect
Most Mozilla and mIRC users can simply point their browser to irc://irc.freenode.net/wikipedia.
All you need is an IRC client installed on your machine (installation of a Java client on the Misplaced Pages server is being considered). For now, you may wish to try the client at jChatIRC. A list of clients respective to your operating system is given in the IRC entry.
Once downloaded and installed perform the following steps (most IRC clients also provide graphical interfaces to common commands):
- Use the /server command to connect to the server, e.g. /server irc.freenode.net
- Choose a nickname by typing /nick <nickname>, e.g. /nick JohnDoe. Nicknames can be up to 16 characters long. You can use letters and numbers (no spaces or symbols).
- Join the channel by typing /join #wikipedia. Channels are the equivalent of chat rooms on IRC.
- For help type /help. Commands on most IRC clients have to be preceded by a '/', channel names by a '#'.
- Optional: You can register your nick with the nickserv service. Type /msg nickserv register <password>, e.g. /msg nickserv register foo. When logging on later on type /msg nickserv identify <password> so that nickserv can identify you as the owner of a nick. For more help, type /msg nickserv help.
- Read the help and readme files of the client you installed for more information.
You can also post a message on the Village pump. Or you can try to contact a wikipedian directly via instant messaging: see Misplaced Pages:Instant Messaging Wikipedians.
