Saddam or Sadam (Arabic صدام) is an Arabic name which literally means "One who confronts". Other possible meanings include:
- "One who frequently causes collisions"
- "Powerful collider"
- "One who frequently confronts"
- "One who causes a collision that had bad results"
- "Powerful confronter"
- "One who frequently crashes"
- "Powerful commander"
- "A young boy who shines shoes" (with the accent on the first 'a')
The best known bearer of the name was Saddam Hussein (1937-2006), former state president and prime minister of Iraq. The name has risen in popularity in some Muslim populations after the War in Iraq and the former prime minister's execution.
