Satu Mare (Hungarian: Szatmár) is a county (judeţ) in North-Western Romania, in the North of Transylvania region - between Maramureş region and Crişana region, with its capital city at Satu Mare (population: 130,573).

It is a member of the Carpathian euroregion.

Demographics

In 2000, it had a population of 392,265 and the population density was 89/km².

The majority of the population are Romanians, but there is an important Hungarian community. Also there are Ukrainians, Slovaks and Rromas (Gypsy).

Geography

This county has a total area of 4,418 km².

In the west there are the Oaş Mountains, members of the Easter Carpathians group. This makes up around 17% of the surface. The rest consists of hills - 20% of the surface - and plains. The Western part of the county is the Eastern part of the Pannonian Plain.

The county is crossed by the Someş River and also Tur River and Crasna River.

Economy

Satu Mare County benefits from its position, on the Western border of Romania, and it's one of the places which attracts major foreign investment in industry and agriculture.
