But the really big question, which you might like to ask, is why if CO2 absorbs IR, why it doesn't also emit it, and the answer is that it does emit IR and in considerable quantities and that helps to cool planet earth, another fact you'll not find in the biased climate articles in wikipedia. | But the really big question, which you might like to ask, is why if CO2 absorbs IR, why it doesn't also emit it, and the answer is that it does emit IR and in considerable quantities and that helps to cool planet earth, another fact you'll not find in the biased climate articles in wikipedia. | ||

Thank you for your contributions to the encyclopedia! In case you are not already aware, an article to which you have recently contributed, Global warming, is on article probation. Global warming and Kleroteria
Norman21, first the simple answer to the global warming question. The sun is a lot hotter than the earth, so the peak of the radiation of the sun is in the visible part of the spectrum and that of the earth is at a much higher wavelength. Both solar and terrestrial radiation is absorbed by the atmosphere, but the bulk of the sun's energy comes to us at wavelengths where the atmosphere does not absorb (except it does scatter blue - which is why the sky is blue, and sunsets - light excluding blue are red).
But the really big question, which you might like to ask, is why if CO2 absorbs IR, why it doesn't also emit it, and the answer is that it does emit IR and in considerable quantities and that helps to cool planet earth, another fact you'll not find in the biased climate articles in wikipedia.
