Egypt is divided into 27 governorates (muhafazat, singular - muhafazah), sorted by the transliterated Arabic name:

  1. Ad Daqahliyah (Dakahleya) الدقهلية
  2. Al Bahr al Ahmar (Red Sea) البحر الأحمر
  3. Al Buhayrah (Beheira) البحيرة
  4. Al Fayyum (Fayum) الفيوم
  5. Al Gharbiyah (Gharbeya) الغربية
  6. Al Iskandariyah (Alexandria) الإسكندرية
  7. Al Isma'iliyah (Ismailia) الإسماعيلية
  8. Al Jizah (Giza) الجيزة
  9. Al Minufiyah (Menufeya) المنوفية
  10. Al Minya (Minya) المنيا

Most governorates have a population density of more than 1000 per km², while the three large ones have a population density of less than 2 per km²
