"Everybody Hates the G.E.D."

Everybody Hates the G.E.D. is the series finale of the Chris Rock UPN/The CW sitcom Everybody Hates Chris. The series ran on UPN for one season and then when UPN was merged with The WB to become The CW it continued for three more seasons. The finale was the 88th episode of the series. The ending is a spoof of the series finale of The Sopranos.

Plot

The real Chris Rock narrates how young Chris has been trying his best to make it to school on time but no matter what he is always late. As he and Greg walk to class, Joey Caruso blocks their path and then when Chris asks are they having a dance off or a fight, Caruso punches Chris in the face and then tells him "You know I can't dance!". To make matters worse, his division teacher Coach Thurman refuses to let him in even though Chris is right behind him. Ms. Morello informs Chris that if he is late again he'll have to repeat the tenth grade. Meanwhile, Drew decides he wants to audition for Showtime at the Apollo's amateur night. The guys at the barber shop all tell him about how they tried to sing A House is Not a Home by Luther Vandross and they all ended up getting boo-ed off the stage. Back at home, Tonya is graduating from sixth grade and needs a new dress and to get her hair done. For once, Julius decides not to be cheap and pays for it while at first Rochelle refused. Chris continues to try to make it school on time but the one time he does, he is the only person at school and Coach Thurman purposely takes his time doing attendance when he knows that Chris is the only kid in school. Julius had loaned Rochelle's friend 25 dollars but she is taking too long to give it back. When Chris misses his train for school, he is sixty seconds away from the school and he has to run through a police shootout, rescue an infant and get held up by the cops after being accused of a robbery. Once he clears all those obstacles, he makes it to school but unfortunately, he is late again and Coach Thurman still refuses to let him in class. Rochelle and Chris have a meeting with Ms. Morello and she informs them that although he passed all of his classes and tests, Chris will now have to repeat the 10th grade. Surprisingly, Rochelle and Julius are accepting this but Chris doesn't. He decides that he's going to drop out of school (much to his parents' anger). After receiving a brutal beating from Rochelle (he is seen wearing a bandage wrapped around his head), he decides to just get his G.E.D. and become a comedian just like Bill Cosby. Later, Drew does very well at the Apollo and Tonya graduates from sixth grade and will move on to middle school. Chris meets up with Greg and says goodbye to him since he will be leaving school but they will still remain friends. Caruso shows up and suddenly gains genuine respect for Chris and asks would he like to be friends with him. When Chris asks him why, Caruso explains that he was jealous of him all these years and all along he really liked him but he just didn't show it. As a replacement for Chris, Caruso decides to just bully Greg instead.

Ending

Chris takes the G.E.D. testing and patiently waits for the results.

In the final scene of the series, Chris decides to relax at a diner and looks around at the patrons who enter and leave the restaurant. He goes through a jukebox and listens to Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer". Later, Rochelle, Drew and Tonya arrive and joins Chris and they all sing the song together. Rochelle informs them that Julius will arrive shortly and when he does he is seen parking his truck and entering the diner and joining the rest of the family. As the family prepares to eat dinner, Julius whips out the results of Chris' test. Rochelle reads the results with a facial expression that doesn't reveal whether he passed or failed. As Chris delivers the final line of the series asking what are the results, the screen suddenly cuts to black in parody of the series finale of The Sopranos, thus making this the end of Everybody Hates Chris.
