Claim that Star Trek Fans Have Asperger Syndrome

In a talk at the Queen's Road Baptist Church in Coventry, England, given on May 2, 2000, Dr. Attwood made the flat statement "I do say that Star Trek conventions are reunions for people with Asperger's." He made a similar claim to the newspaper the Ellsworth (Maine) American on July 29, 2004, saying "Star Trek conventions are secret reunions for people with Asperger's Syndrome." .

These statements, made four years apart, give the impression of being a mass diagnosis of thousands of people (whom Dr. Attwood has presumably never met) of having a pervasive developmental disorder merely because they are fans of a particular television program.
