Imagemaps

Given that you're actively editing {{infobox election}}, would you mind taking a look at my year-old request that the template include imagemap functionality if you get the time? I think it'd be useful for most U.S. federal election articles. If it's not possible or you don't have the time, no worries. – Hysteria18 19:32, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

I can try, though I'm not familiar with the image map syntax. Can you point me at an infobox which presently supports an image map so that I can try porting it? Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 08:03, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
To be honest, I'm not sure there is one. I think the syntax itself would be fairly simple and/or irrelevant though: to avoid confusion and clutter, the infobox should probably require the imagemap itself (which otherwise requires an awful lot of code – see User:Hysteria18/list for an example) to be saved as a template. So, as far as I understand you'd just need to add an imagemap parameter pretty similar to the existing map parameter, but which required a template rather than an image as the input. Then again, I'm pretty incompetent at these things, so I'll defer to you. – Hysteria18 21:04, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
...Sorry I took so long. I've added | map = to the template: this is a freeform field, so you can pass it a template. Is that sufficient? Give me a shout if you need any help. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 14:06, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
That's perfect, thanks. – Hysteria18 16:20, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Chemical element pronunciations in infobox

I'm very concerned that this was unlaterally rolled out with only the briefest of mentions on template talk: looks like the same happened with articles containing {{starbox}}es too. I'm going through and rolling these back now, which is probably going to take me all day: if you want to propose the general removal of pronunciation data from article ledes then start a centralised discussion on it first. Please don't do this again until that's happened. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:35, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

I'm quite unhappy that you are unilaterally reverting this change when opportunity was allowed for discussion. A convention is not the same as a guideline. Certainly for the astronomy articles, I believe it is appropriate for WPAstronomy to set the conventions.—RJH (talk) 18:15, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
As you're aware, the onus is on the editor wishing to make the change to state his case after being reverted. I'd have done so when the change was originally made if I'd noticed it happening (the "opportunity allowed for discussion" did not, at any point, suggest that you were bulk-removing pronunciation from element articles): I'm evidently not the only one to disagree with it, either. As such, it's time this went to a wider forum (and not just the chemicals / astronomy projects, per WP:CONLIMITED) to see how the community weighs in. As for the status of conventions relative to guidelines, the only difference is that one is codified and one isn't. The MoS is supposed to be descriptive of best practice, rather than prescriptive, and it is convention which develops first rather than being prescribed from above. If there's wider discussion then it may well be worth updating the MoS to reflect the result. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 18:40, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Forgot to say: thanks for opening a central discussion. This is the best solution in the long run, not least because if consensus lies on your side that every article will be benefit and not just the element / space articles. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 17:06, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

If you're able to use Twinkle then by far the easiest way is to enable Twinkle in your user preferences. This adds a new set of tabs at the top of the page which can issue vandalism warnings or post to WP:AIV with one click. If not, then you could just try pinging a friendly admin. History of salt

Well, "Cocio" attracted my eye because it was a typo, but then I thought that "history" unqualified by adjectives generally means "what humans know of history". On the principle that shorter is better (except where it introduces intolerable ambiguity), I chopped it. --Wtshymanski (talk) 14:40, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Mary Seacole

Below is a copy ('copy and paste' type copy) of my recent correspondence.

Any idea why her death date details appear duplicated in the info box text ? (Hardly my specialist subject, despite myself working for the NHS for over eight years, but what a lady). Regards,
Derek R Bullamore (talk) 23:55, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm not a template guru, but this duplication appears to have been introduced by Thumperward (talk · contribs) on the 14th. I'd try to fix it myself, but it is late here and I don't want to risk destroying the template. Prolly better if you ask him to review his recent changes to {{Infobox Medical Person}}. Twinkle has a rollback feature; if the most recent edit to a page is vandalism, then it should add three links on the diff page (rollback AGF, rollback, and rollback vandalism). Any of those will undo the edit, add an edit summary, and automatically open the user's talk page to issue a warning. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 08:06, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

not a football kit, maybe you can help tho'

I am trying to create Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Scouting/Article incubator/Template:Infobox WorldScouting uniform, but I am blowing it all over the place. Can you have a look and make suggestions?--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 09:16, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Do you actually have the images needed to create these kits yet? It seems like it's going to be very difficult to test the code and check the layout if not. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:22, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
I am working on the list now, sketchy mess of photos, websites... but getting there, thank you.
Or do you mean a template graphic for a uniform? I have a great one I can suggest, let me know.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 13:58, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
I mean the actual template graphics. They are, after all, the core of the template. Yeah, if you've got a working example then please point me at it and I'll get to checking the code. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 14:03, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

We don't need all the badges and numbers, just the shirt/pants/hat and a female version.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 14:07, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
Aaaaah. The thing is, {{football kit}} uses a compositive kit formed from various arm, body, shorts graphics, of the type found on Template:Football kit/pattern list. They would need to be created first. I'm not sure what the request is for: do you need help creating those? That's not really my forte, I'm afraid, though I could ask around. Or do I have the wrong end of the stick here? Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 14:10, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
No, you're helping, I am flying blind, so this is great! Should I ask the GL to cut it into chunks, then?--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 11:00, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
It might need to be complete redone, unfortunately, as it's not facing directly forwards and it's a little detailed for the size it's going to be displayed at. One good thing is that sleeves, shorts and socks from the football kits can easily be re-used, so it's really only the body sections that need done. It's also probably not necessary to have a distinct female kit unless it differs significantly from the male one, as it's only supposed to be a paper doll (gaming) representation. I might have a look at trying to turn out an approximate example later, though my enthusiasm for templatespace work has taken a bit of a hit recently. Template:Infobox former monarchy

Hi, Thumperward. The reason I reverted your edit is because there are dozens of articles using the template which do not have a specific value for the CoA width parameter, based on the assumption that the default width was 120px. When you removed this default width value, many templates suddenly found themselves with HUGE coats of arms, which were visually striking and quite ugly. Therefore, I believe the default width of 120px should be kept. If you wish to remove it entirely, then you should first ensure that all the articles using the template have a specific value for the width parameter. Regards. --BomBom (talk) 19:47, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Hmmm. I can see where you're coming from (test cases), but infobox images shouldn't really be downsized so much. Is there a reason the infobox needs both the crest and an additional image? Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 13:39, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Piss Christ

Hi,

Regarding this summary: was that meant as "per mailing list"? Any chance of a link to the relevant discussion? Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 19:54, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

The size of the image was briefly mentioned on the foundation-l mailing list, with the question as to why it was larger then an usual image ([http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/foundation-l/2010-July/thread.html#59843 Section "Boycott in ace at wiki") I would link the exact post, but somehow i cannot seem to find the exact message that contained that comment in the archives (I have a copy of it in my own inbox though).
Since it is generally preferable to set images to thumbnail size anyway (That way someone can change the default image size though the preferences) i just went ahead and removed the set size, mentioning the mailing list as the source for making tha change in the first place. Excirial 20:12, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
This one? Fair enough: the image's portrait aspect did make it a bit big at 300px (which was the historical recommendation for lede image size). Thanks for the heads-up. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 20:23, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

I've told you more than twice. You've already been blocked for edit warring: edits like that are not helping in the slightest, and you should honestly consider yourself lucky for not getting another block for that. Do you want to end up like Grant.Alpaugh (talk · contribs), who has had year-long bans because he can't control his temper while improving our MLS articles? Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 20:25, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
You make a good point. But why hasn't that guy been banned yet? His POV is disgusting. – PeeJay 20:37, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
Because he promised to behave the last time that was brought up. If you think that's worth revisiting, ping the admin who last blocked him. Please don't get riled up by it again. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 20:39, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Yea, I meant to use prod. In looking at this, I'm thinking it can be speedy tagged again. The first one for was no context now we have spam and A7 issues. Or should this just go to a prod? Vegaswikian (talk) 15:59, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

I'd recommend a full AfD, which would be what would have been required if you'd put a prod on it anyway. I suspect it might be borderline, given that the company has at least had an association with several notable entities. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 16:15, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Your reply at RFA to question 5A

Well, maybe I'm being really dense, but I just don't get your reply about this. Another editor at the rfa suggests you were being ironic. Is that correct? - your reply doesn't mention irony. Could you please dedicate more verbage to this? This page would be a good place. Novickas (talk) 16:04, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

I suppose "ironic" is the best way of putting it, as it wasn't meant literally. It is typically expected that editors who participate in AfD are editors in good standing: those who aren't are likely to be accused of being SPAs or socks. However, there still remains a climate (it's getting better, but it's not yet solved) where it's difficult to remain in good standing if one makes delete comments or nominations because one is likely to have one's reputation impacted for doing so. Quite honestly, it was a throwaway line directed at a few participants in that AfD, with whom I'm pretty familiar, and I think it looks worse out of context. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 16:13, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
Appreciate the reply - and all your work here - but still have adminship concerns - will post at the RFA. Novickas (talk) 21:32, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

re: Flagpole Sitta

If you do a quick glimpse of Yahoo Answers/lyric sites/etc and search by the lyrics, you can see that the song is attributed to Green Day very often. Is it OR? - Penwhale | 23:39, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Those aren't reliable sources. It's trivia anyway: practically any pop-punk song gets attributed to Green Day on occasion, just like practically every English ska song of the Eighties gets attributed to the Specials. It's not worth noting in individual cases unless reliable sources have written about it. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward: not at work) - talk 06:50, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Amusement park infoboxes

I believe you have seen them, but there seems like there is much in common between {{Infobox Amusement Ride}}, {{Infobox water ride}}, {{Infobox roller coaster}}, {{Infobox roller coaster simplified}}, and probably more? I was thinking it might be best to expand the most generic and then look into merging some. There may be some resistance to merging the roller coaster ones, but the others seem practically unused. I noticed this while closing the related TFD and replacing an untemplated variant here and here. Good luck with the RFA by the way, we certainly need help clearing the backlog at TFD. Plastikspork ―Œ 02:36, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, a merge is long overdue. Seems like they were forked basically at will for a long time. What with the merging, the need to convert to {{infobox}} and (hopefully) the doing away with of auto-categorisation, there's a lot of work to be done here, so I might save it for a rainy day. As for the RfA, well, fingers crossed, though I can't be optimistic unfortunately. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward: not at work) - talk 06:53, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

You just picked up my references to Dry glue and High shear mixer at ANI, didn't you XD XD. I'd have written longer ledes if I actually knew anything about the subject in either case..... --Elen of the Roads (talk) 13:51, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Of course. :) Randomly clicking things that people link to on ANI is a great way of finding new articles to work on, and I'm trying to keep myself occupied right now. :) Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward: not at work) - talk 14:16, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
I do that too - that's probably how I came to those two. Although in my case, there's more of work-avoidance about it :) :)--Elen of the Roads (talk) 14:19, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

New squad table

Re

I know you said you would prefer to wait a while, but the quickest way to sort this without kb after kb of talkpage rhetoric is to actually come up with a good solution. Would you consider having a go at this a little sooner?

If you want to try things out in vivo to get more feedback, it could be worth working towards a solution for Manchester United's squad table, which is currently stymieing its Featured Article request for this very reason. Knepflerle (talk) 12:35, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

I'd be very surprised if we got all the edge cases sorted out in time to roll a new style out (which will impact nine and a half thousand articles) in time for an ongoing FAR, but I'll see what I can do. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward: not at work) - talk 12:46, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick reply! I was more thinking of coming up with something for Manchester United's article as a proof-of-principle that something can be made which includes all the required info and looks OK. Once that prototype's been accepted and in use in that one article, we've can start working out where the exceptional problems may lie, and sort them out before making it a standard template. Thanks for considering this, Knepflerle (talk) 13:00, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
No worries. I'm going to be trying to take a wikibreak for the next 24 hours or so, but I'll get a look after that. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward: not at work) - talk 13:03, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
