The Brothers Karamazov is a 1958 historical film made by MGM, based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel The Brothers Karamazov. It was directed by Richard Brooks and produced by Pandro S. Berman. The screenplay was by Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein and Richard Brooks. It was entered into the 1958 Cannes Film Festival.
Set in the Russia of the 1870's, the film follows four brothers who are struggling to keep their relationships together. When the father of the family Fyodor ponders an heir, tensions between the brothers escalate in rivalry, jealousy, lust and murder.
The film would be the first movie for both William Shatner and Albert Salmi: they both did film and TV during the 50s and 60s. Shatner stayed with TV all the way to doing Captain Kirk on Star Trek. Actor Albert Salmi turned down an Oscar nomination for his acting role in the movie.
