The Poliedro de Caracas ("Caracas Polyhedron") is an indoor sports arena, located on the grounds adjacent to Hipodromo La Rinconada, in Caracas, Venezuela. It was initially designed by architect Jimmy Alcock, in collaboration with Héctor Hermidas and Roberto Andrade, in 1971. However, the Geodesic Dome was not concluded, until 1974, when US engineer T.C. Howard of Synergetics, Inc. built it, with 145 meters diameter and 38 meters high.
It is housed beneath a geodesic dome with a seating capacity of 13,000 and is used for concerts, sporting events such as basketball, ice skating shows, circuses, and trade expositions like Autoshows, expomuebles (furniture). Lately, it has also been used for government-sponsored political events.
It was finished in 1974 and officially inaugurated with the fight between George Foreman and Ken Norton on March 26, 1974. It also served as the stage for many local acts like Melissa, Yordano, Ilan Chester among others and international acts that visited Venezuela, such as Sergio Mendes, Donna Summer, Ray Conniff, Queen, The Police, Shakira, Kylie Minogue, Whitney Houston, etc.
One of the main events that has taken place each year in El Poliedro (up to 2009), is the Miss Venezuela beauty pageant.
