Biography

She was the yougnest of six children of Martin Lovrenčević and Ivana Lovrenčević. She was born in Zagreb on 3 March 1897. She met her future housband in 1915 when she was 18. He was 8 years older then her. In the same year, they both found job in office of lawyer dr. Aleksandar Horvat. Maria was, on her mother's side, Jewish. Her mother was Ivana Herzfeld, a Jew, born in Vienna in 1859 from father Mavro Herzfeld and mother Naneta née Votiz. Maria's father, Martin Lovrenčević, was a respected journalist and editor in chief of newspapers of Croatian Party of Rights in Zagreb, "Hrvatsko pravo" ("Croatian Right") and "Hrvatska" ("Croatia"). Maria finished commercial high school and later found job in Horvat's office who was a president of Croatian Party of Rights. She worked as a stenographer and later as a secretary. Maria, in 1941, shorted her name in Mara. She was also very pleas when people would spoke of her as Croatian mother.

On 12 August 1922 she married Ante Pavelić after 7 years of relationship at St. Mark's Church in Zagreb. Their godfather and godmother were Frane Zapletić, owner of bar at Maksimir, where members of party were visitors, and his wife. They were married by Svetozar Ritig. She had three children with him, the oldest daughter Višnja (1923), son Velimir (nicknamed Braco, died in 2006) and the youngest daughter Mirjana (8 November 1926). His daughters are still alive. Višnja never married and lives in Madrid, while Mirjana is married with Srećko Pšeničnik and they live in Canada. They have four children, daughters Zvjezdana (1951), Ajša (1954), Ivana (1957) and Jelena (1968). Ajša, Ivana and Jelena live in Canada, while Zvjezdana lives in England. They are all married with non-Croats.

Dido Kvaternik and Edmund Glaise von Horstenau stated that Maria was very intelligent and that she played important roll in Pavelić's life, moreover, she had big influence on him in his private life.
