Joan is the feminine form of the Old French Johanne, Joanne, from the Latin Ioanna, Iohanna, from the Greek Iōanna. According to the Gospel, this name was borne by a follower of Jesus.
The popularity of the actress Siobhán McKenna (1923–1986) helped the resurgence of the name (without an accent) in the twentieth century.
