Prem Rawat, also widely known as Maharaji, was born on 10th of December 1957 in the small town Dehra Dun near Hardwar, India. He is the youngest of four brothers. His father was Shri Hans Ji Maharaj a well known Indian Master who gave Maharaji the gift of Self-Knowledge when he was only 6 years old. In 1966 Shri Hans Ji Maharaj passed away and Maharaji became the person to make this message of peace available. He continued speaking to large audiences in India throughout his childhood.

In 1971 at the age of 13 Maharaji was invited to come to London and Los Angeles. Since this time he is teaching Self-Knowledge in the West, a method of four techniques to turn the senses within. These techniques are shown to look inside, to listen inside, to feel inside and to taste inside. This is not an intellectual task but more a self-empathic awareness of the inner self. As of 2003 there are up to 500,000 people in more than 70 countries around the world who received the techniques of Knowledge.

Maharaji claims he teaches a way to ] and to go within oneself, which he calls "Knowledge". According to practitioners of this "Knowledge", it is the way to inner peace. It is believed to be the tool for enjoyment of the gift of life.

The movement that he founded is called the ]. Later the Divine Light Mission's ]s were dismantled with Maharaji remaining the head of the movement but which was then renamed ]. The followers of Maharaji are called ]s.

Prem Rawat's elder brother Satpal also claimed ownership of their father's Divine Light Mission which led to a protracted legal challenge in India. Satpal won ownership of all the Indian Divine Light Mission assets whilst Prem Rawat retained ownership of the assets of Divine Light Mission (renamed Elan Vital) elsewhere. Satpal positions himself in essentially the same manner as his brother, that of being the ''Satguru'' (true guru).
