It comes from the Greek word kanon (κανών). It is used very commonly in India.
Qanun is also the Arabic name for The Canon of Medicine.
The 10th sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Suleiman was known in the Ottoman Empire as Suleiman Kanuni, due to his code of laws.
