Klaipėda District (Memel District, Memelland) is the name of the coastland of Lithuania around Klaipėda and the Curonian Lagoon, on the right bank of river Nemunas (Memel). From 1328 - 1920, it was a part of Prussia. From 1871 to 1920 it belonged to Imperial Germany. As separate unite it was formed in 1920, when it was separated from Germany and the name Klaipėda District was used for first time. From 1920 to 1923, it was governed by France. In 1923, after some military incidents, inspired by Lithuanian authorities, Klaipėda District was ceded to Lithuania as integral autonomous unite of this state. From 1926 on, it was gouverned under Martial Law by Lithuania to end autonomy of German majority. In March 1939 in was handed back from Lithuania to Germany, being again part of East Prussia until the end of Second World War and the Expulsion of Germans after World War II. After WWII became a part of Lithuanian SSR.
