This is a listing of undead characters in Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series of novels. Template:Spoiler

Vampires

St. Louis vampires

Jean Claude

With long, curling black hair and piercing blue eyes, Jean Claude is a beautiful French-born vampire, 400+ years old. He was favorite of Belle Morte for his eyes, and, like many vampires of Belle Morte's line, Jean Claude was selected for his almost perfect mortal beauty. As a result, even when he is unable to use mental influence on others, he is still breathtakingly attactive. He became the Master Vampire of St. Louis after Anita killed Nikolaos.

Jean Claude is extraordinarily seductive, both with regard to his mental abilities and conventional seduction. He is superb at playing "vampire politics," and can be surprisingly manipulative and ruthless when necessary. Jean Claude typically thinks several steps ahead of his triumvirate partners Anita and Richard.

Jean Claude pursued Anita, both as a lover and a human servant. His master class abilities include the ability to draw energy from lust, the ardeur, the ability to call wolves and werewolves, flight, and a triumvirate with his human servant, Anita, and his animal servant, Richard. Jean Claude's voice is preternaturally seductive.

Jean Claude's daytime lair is the subbasement of the Circus of the Damned. He owns and runs Guilty Pleasures, The Laughing Corpse, and Danse Macabre, as well as other clubs. Appearances: All novels.

Asher

Disfigured down the right side of his body from head to foot from having holy water poured on him by priests. Uses long, wavy, golden hair to cover face's scars. Approximately 300+ years old. Another favorite of Belle Morte for his sapphire eyes. Jean Claude's second in command. Asher and Jean-Claude were lovers long ago, along with Asher's human servant, Julianna. Still has trouble forgiving Jean-Claude for Julianna's death. First appearance: Burnt Offerings.

Gretchen

Gretchen was created by Jean Claude almost 200 years ago. Pale, with wavy blond hair falling near to her waist, Gretchen is hopelessly in love with Jean Claude, in every sense of the word, and sees Anita as the primary obstacle to his love. Although she "has not used that name in 100 years," Gretchen was originally named Gretel. A master vampire, she has strong mental powers, a resistance to silver, the power of flight. Appearances: The Lunatic Cafe.

Robert

A beautiful blond, Robert is first introduced as one of the strippers at Guilty Pleasures, and later is promoted to its manager. Although a century old, Robert is essentially a coward, and repeatedly backs down in confrontations with Jean Claude's enemies. Appearances: Guilty Pleasures, The Lunatic Cafe.

Damien

Red haired viking; Anita's vampire servant (must obey direct orders from her) and eventual lover. Made by "She who has no name" - later revealed to be Moroven. Member of Anita's second triumvirate, with Nathaniel. First appearance: The Killing Dance

Requiem

Jean-Claude's third in command. Another favorite of Belle Morte for his blue/sapphire eyes. First appearance: Incubus Dreams.

Nikolaos

The master of the city in Guilty Pleasures and more than 1000 years old, Nikolaos had the appearance of a young girl (and sounded like Shirley Temple when not angry). Based on the description, Nikolaus was possibly what Hamilton later described as a "night hag" - a vampire that could draw power from fear. Her mental and physical strength were formidable. Nikolaos had a variety of master-class abilities, including the ability to call rats and wererats, to fly, and to wake during the day. Anita killed Nikolaos in Guilty Pleasures, making Jean-Claude master of the city. Appearances: Guilty Pleasures.

Valentine

A vampire with dozens of human kills, Valentine was the only vampire survivor of an earlier fight between his nest of vampires and Anita, Manny, and Edward. During that fight, Anita received the scars she possessed at the beginning of Guilty Pleasures, and Valentine's face was scarred by holy water. Valentine promised to kill Anita when Anita's work for Nikolaos was completed, but was himself killed by Edward. (Guilty Pleasures). Appearances: Guilty Pleasures.

Aubrey

Centuries old but not a master, Aubrey was a very powerful lieutenant of Nikolaos. Aubrey was partially insane as a result of punishments received from Nikolaos. At her orders, he blackmailed Anita by enthralling and threatening to kill Anita's friend. Ultimately, Anita killed Aubrey with a silver-loaded shotgun. (Guilty Pleasures). Appearances: Guilty Pleasures.

Willie McCoy

Small time hood turned vampire. Friend of Anita's. One of only two or three vampires Anita has known before and after being turned. Is dating Hannah. First appearance: Guilty Pleasures. MONEKY DK

Yasmeen

An "exotic" looking master vampire with dark skin and hair, Yasmeen and her human servant, Marguerite, were Jean Claude's allies during the events of Circus of the Damned. Yasmeen was difficult to control and threatened Anita and Larry whenever she had the opportunity. She was torn apart by Alejandro in the final battle of that novel. Appearances: Circus of the Damned.

Dead Dave

Cop who was kicked off the force after he became a vampire. Runs a bar called Dead Dave's; sells information (cheap) to Anita. First appearance: Guilty Pleasures

Malcolm

Head of the Church of Eternal Life, where being a permanent member means you will live forever (stakes, fire, and crosses aside). Anita is not altogether happy with this organization, since it tends to create plenty of emotionally messed-up vampires (which she doesn't really need more of). First appearance: Guilty Pleasures.

Liv

Was a vampire under Jean-Claude's control. Betrayed them to the Traveler, who promised her the ability to kill or at least dominate Anita. Appearances: The Killing Dance, Burnt Offerings.

Buzz

"Buzz the vampire" is a heavily muscled vampire bouncer at Guilty Pleasures. Approximately 20 years dead, Buzz does not have the inhuman mannerisms of older vampires. He typically guards the door in a t-shirt, regardless of weather conditions. Appearances: Guilty Pleasures, the Lunatic Cafe.

The Vampire Council and their followers

Mister Oliver

Also known as "the Earthmover," Mr. Oliver was a member of the Vampire Counsel and, to his knowledge, the oldest living vampire. Oliver was approximately 4 feet tall, with a sloping brow, absent chin, and expensively cut blow-dried hair. Because Oliver was member of the homo erectus species, Anita estimated his age at approximatelt one million years. A master vampire, Oliver's abilities included the ability to cause earthquakes, the power to "draw blood from a distance," the ability to levitate himself or others, the ability to remain awake during the day and mask his vampire nature almost totally, voice powers similar to Jean Claude's and the ability to call snakes and snake-like supernatural creatures. His retinue included Alejandro, Melanie the Lamia, and his human servant Karl Inger. An opponent of the liberalization of vampire laws, Oliver planned to kill Jean Claude, become master of Saint Louis, then force all vampires in the city to engage in a killing spree. Although Oliver defeated Jean Claude, Alejandro and Anita killed him before he could sacrifice Jean Claude and begin his plan. Appearances: Circus of the Damned

Alejandro

An Aztec master vampire more than one thousand years old, Alejandro was one of Mister Oliver's retinue and plotted to destroy Oliver and gain his freedom. Alejando was largely immune to silver and had the ability to turn humans into vampires with a single bite. He was also able to reflect a flamethrower attack, causing the stream of flames to reverse in midair. Alejandro led a pack of four other vampires, most or all of whom were killed by Edward. Against Anita's will, Alejandro made Anita into his human servant, removing the marks that Jean Claude had previously placed on her. Anita ultimately killed Alejandro, barely surviving the experience herself. Appearances: Circus of the Damned.

Belle-Morte

Member of the vampire council. Progenitor (le sourdre de sang) of the Bloodline of Asher(and originally of Jean-Claude's before he became the founder of his own new Bloodline). Mother of the Ardeur. First appearance: Only in mention

Musette

One of Belle Morte's lieutenants. First appearance: Cerulean Sins

The Traveler

Vampire council member. Has the ability to possess other vampire's bodies, though that vampire's conscience is still awake. This seems to be limited only to vampires considerably weaker than himself; Jean-Claude was once the victim of this ability. He also has the ability to grant his own powers to lesser vampires temporarily, and he can shield others from sensing him.

The Traveler was the only member of the council that is revealed to have known Oliver's plans to take over St. Louis and then use the vampires to make them illegal in the states there. He did nothing because council does not fight council. He also does not like Padma.

He is a strictly homosexual vampire and he has a human servant: Balthazar, who is also his lover. First appearance: Burnt Offerings

Master of Beasts

Vampire council member. Also called "Padma". Is able to call animals wereleopards, wererats, and werewolves. Gave his only son (a wererat) to Anita to save his own life. First appearance: Burnt Offerings

Morte D'Amour

A member of the vampire council. Her name translates to "Dead from Love".

Yvette

One of Morte D'Amour's followers.

Warrick

One of Morte D'Amour's followers. Yvette made Warrick into a vampire in the 1200's. Warrick had the ability to control and create fire (pyrokinesis). Was also able to walk in sunshine. Burned to death in suicide while holding onto and thus killing Yvette (Burnt Offerings). First Appearance: Burnt Offerings.

Branson vampires

Seraphina

Sometime after Jean Claude's ascension to Master of St. Louis (at the end of Guilty Pleasures and before the events in Bloody Bones, the Vampire Council decided that Branson, Missouri had become sufficiently populous to split off from Jean Claude's territory and support its own group of vampires. They promised Jean Claude that they would appoint a vampire of equal or lesser power to himself, and selected Seraphina to become Master of Branson.

Seraphina was a master vampire and was approximately 600 years old when Anita met her. She was turned late in life and appeared older than most vampires, with streaks of grey and white in her hair and a wrinkled face. She had been Jean Claude's master in the past.

Unknown to Jean Claude, Seraphina somehow radically increased her power while in the "old country" (presumably France) and became powerful enough to assume mastery over Janos, Xavier, and the other vampires she brought to Branson. Her abilities included the power to detect and offer others their deepest desire, extremely strong mental powers, flight, the ability to draw blood from a distance, and the ability to call ghosts, rather than an animal.

Seraphina was obsessed with achieving true immortality, and sought to drink the blood of the fey boggle, Rawhead and Bloody Bones. When she broke her word to the fey, Anita and Larry were able to break the spell allowing her to draw on its power. At that point, Seraphina decided to attempt to control Anita, reasoning that a necromancer's blood might grant her more power. Although Seraphina offered Anita the (illusory) opportunity to be reunited with her mother, Anita was able to reveal Seraphina's location to the authorities, who burned her hideout, killing Seraphina.

Janos

Bettina

Pallas

Xavier

Ivy

Andy

Elsie

Other vampires

Collin

Master Vampire of the city of (?). Was not convinced when Anita came to rescue Richard once that she did not mean to replace him with Asher, who also came. Started a fight and lost both his second in command and nearly his life. Human servant is a necromancer, but not as powerful as Anita. Died after Anita killed his human servant Nikki.

Vlad Tepes

In Bloody Bones, Jean Claude states that the Vampire Counsel killed Vlad Tepes, also known as Dracula, for failing to keep his affairs sufficiently hidden. Jean Claude states that Tepes died in 1476 or 1477. (Note: The historical Vlad III Dracula died in 1476).

Other

Zachary

Zachary is a former animator who returned from the dead as the leader of a pack of ghouls. He was able to remain 'alive' and to maintain a human appearance by sacrificing vampires to charge a magical gris-gris. Zachary was killed when Anita destroyed the enchantment sustaining him. (Guilty Pleasures). Appearances: Guilty Pleasures.
