"I sit with Shakespeare and he winces not. Across the color line I move arm in arm with Balzac and Dumas, where smiling men and welcoming women glide in gilded halls. From out the caves of evening that swing between the strong- limbed earth and the tracery of the stars, I summon Aristotle and Aurelius and what soul I will, and they come all graciously with no scorn nor condescension. So, wed with Truth, I dwell above the Veil. Is this the life you grudge us, O knightly America? Is this the life you long to change into the dull red hideousness of Georgia? Are you so afraid lest peering from this high Pisgah, between Philistine and Amalekite, we sight the Promised Land?." - Of the Training of Black Men. The Souls of Black Folk - W.E.B. DuBois

User page award

Congratulations, Encyclopedist! Your user page has been nominated for the Esperanza User Page Award! Five judges will look over your user page and award it 1-10 points in four categories:

  • Attractiveness: general layout, considering colour scheme and/or use of tables if applicable
  • Usefulness: links to subpages or editing aids, helpful information
  • Interesting-ness: quirky, unique, captivating, or funny content
  • General niceness: at the judges' discretion

But first, you must be chosen as a finalist. If your user page is chosen as one of the five finalists, you'll have the chance to win an award created just for having a great user page!

History of Earth

Hi, Encyclopedist. I saw on your user page that you're interested in history; I was wondering if I could ask you to take a look at an article I'm working on. I've been writing History of Earth for several weeks now; I just finished working on the human history section—basically, trying to condense all of human history into a couple paragraphs. If you have the time and inclination, I'd appreciate if you would take a look at it. See Talk:History of Earth#Human history for more information. Thanks! — Knowledge Seeker 04:20, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Wow, I've had a bout of insomnia, so I got up and editted Misplaced Pages! Well, my first though on looking at the article was strictly on its vagueness. We are talking about the entire Earth - a planet that has existed 4.5 billion years! I think one article on it is just an invitation for ambiguity - maybe a fork article would be better. Also, I think this article could be largely confused with the History of the World and World history articles. Also, you may not be able to condense the broad term of human history in a couple of paragraphs!
You've written the article very well, and I think your work is excellent. But to be bluntly honest I would vote delete if someone added it to the VfD just for the reasons I stated above. Keep up the good work though!εγκυκλοπαίδεια* 06:33, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
Broad articles on major topics are Misplaced Pages's weakness. It is easy to write detailed articles on very specific subjects, but to tie in overall themes to discuss a subject in general is quite difficult. For instance, there is a relatively detailed article on the drug metolazone (which I wrote), the article on the class of drugs, diuretic, is all right, and the broad group anti-hypertensive is little more than a list of lists. I think that just as an article on human history is needed to weave together the themes of these two hundred or so millenia, so needed sorely is an article weaving together the themes of these last several billion years of our planet. In fact, I was quite surprised not to find such an article here yet. Topics like Science or Human are incredibly broad and highly complex, yet serve to unite the various facets of their disciplines. They need not include all details; that's what sub-articles are for. We shouldn't shy away from tackling big topics just because they'll be difficult to write. Aside from deletion, do you have any suggestions for improvement? What do you mean by forking the article? I agree about history of the world and objected to that title on the talk page (I personally would call it Human history), but the editors there disagreed. I can think of no more appropriate title for this article with the possible exception of History of the Earth, which makes little difference. — Knowledge Seeker 06:54, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

My RfA

Thank you!
Thank you!
Hi Encyclopedist. On behalf of my right eye, I'd like to thank you for giving me your support on my recent RfA. It ended with a final tally of (73/2/2) and therefore I have been installed as an administrator now, and I'm ready to serve Wikipedians all over the world with my newly acquired mop and bucket. If you have any questions, do not hestitate to forward them to my talkpage. Once again, thanks for your support. SoothingR 20:51, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Military history of Mexico

Sorry for the belated reply. I found this which should be a nice enough primer for a general article such as Military history of Mexico. The best part of this is that it comes directly from the Army (SEDENA is the Secretariat of Defense back home). Of course it's all in Spanish, but you should be alright. Let me know if you need any help. ¡Saludos! -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ 00:19, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

I have no words

My sweet dear Juan, I've been thinking to drop you a line here, but I think I'll rather write you an email instead. Have you ever felt like you wanna say a thousand things, yet, when the time comes, no words can actually come out? That's how I feel now - all scrambled up. I suppose that's what happens when you try to talk to a very special person... a thousand kisses, I'll go to bed to clear my mind, and I swear I'll get back to you tomorrow. *Smoochs* and {hugs}, Phædriel - 02:29, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

My RfA

Thanks for your vote My request for adminship passed with a final result of 78/2/0. Hopefully I will live up to everyone's expectations. Please ask if I can ever help out with anything in the future.

My RfA

Thank you for your support of my request for adminship. I'm delighted that the RfA ultimately succeeded with a final consensus of 52/1/0, so I am now an administrator. If you ever have any comments regarding my editing, or I can help you at any point in the future, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page. Again, thank you! /talk 10:59, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

My RfA

Thanks for voting! Although this is a bit late in coming, I want to thank you for voting (no matter what your vote was) in my recent request for adminship. You might be aware that it did not pass due to a lack of consensus. The final tally was 21/9/10. I think I will try again this spring or summer after I have gained a bit more experience and met a few more fellow editors. Thanks again!

Hi

I took a look through your last few hundred edits. I don't see anything in there that would be a certain show-stopper, although edit summaries like won't be helpful. Since people will be scrutinising your "NPA slips" as you call them, I guess you'd have to decide what you think of this series of edits; they're suboptimal but not personal attacks. They'd be brought up in an RfA, but might not sink it considering the good work you do on articles. You have now a good edit summary usage (the new criterion a la mode) and, everyone already knows, a wide variety of experience and good familiarity with policy. From your Misplaced Pages: space edits, one possible criticism is that you sometimes seem to employ pure voting in AfDs, just writing '''Delete''' ~~~~, eg. many of those on Feb 8th. That said, every regular at AfD (and thank goodness we have some) has done a lot worse than that once in a while! -Splash 22:23, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Well, that would be a very clear assumption of bad-faith of a sort and I don't think it would be a reasonable thing to say. Good luck if decide to run. -Splash 00:25, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:OldCapitol.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:OldCapitol.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Misplaced Pages (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Misplaced Pages:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Misplaced Pages:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Stan 04:55, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Generic AfD message

Whats with the generic "well argued nomination" line? Trying to up your edit count? I know you've been advised to do more than simply write "delete" but it's not much of an improvement. Deizio 22:58, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

εγκυκλοπαίδεια* 23:04, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
I came here to comment on your "well argued nomination" tag line and was surprised to find that I'm not alone! Specifically, you placed that label here, which was in fact a BADLY argued nomination, where the nominator hadn't checked the facts. I voted the same as you, but it didn't look like you were voting with due diligence. Slowmover 23:13, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Three forms of mathematical induction

This article was intended to be comprehensible to all mathematicians.

It was not intended to teach mathematical induction. It was not intended to explain what mathematical induction is, nor how to use it.

What I see is (mostly) a bunch of non-mathematicians looking at the stub form in which the article appeared when it was nominated from deletion, and seeing that

  • It is not comprehensible to ordinary non-mathematicians who know what mathematical induction is, and
  • The article titled mathematical induction is comprehensible to ordinary non-mathematicians, even those who know --- say --- secondary-school algebra, but have never heard of mathematical induction.

And so I have now expanded the article far beyond the stub stage, including

  • Substantial expansion and organization of the introductory section.
  • Two examples of part of the article that is probably hardest to understand to those who haven't seen these ideas.
  • An prefatory statement right at the top, saying that this article is NOT the appropriate place to try to learn what mathematical induction is or how to use it, with a link to the appropriate article for that. It explains that you need to know mathematical induction before you can read this article.

Therefore, I invite those who voted to delete before I did these recent de-stubbing edits, to reconsider their votes in light of the current form of the article.

(Nothing like nomination for deletion to get you to work on a long-neglected stub article!) Michael Hardy 23:22, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi again!!

Falar é mais complicado.

alguns erros: Ainda estou praticando ao espelho a cada noite. Talvez me ajude! Agora, posso ler a língua francesa um pouco também.

In Portuguese you must not forget the accordance, that is: língua francês is not correct because língua is a female word. Francês is a male word. So, if you say: French, you say francês, but if you use "língua", you must say "francesa", because língua is a female word.

male words often end with an "o", female with an "a". for instance: A mesa (the table) O sapato (the shoe) O Sol (the Sun) A Lua (the Moon) A Terra (the Earth)

Mary is beautiful you must say: The (female) Mary is beautiful(female) A Maria é linda Paul is handsome: you must say: The (male) Paul is beautiful(male) O Paulo é lindo

In English you have a tendency to use "also" (também) in the end, in Portuguese that feels better in the beginning of the sentence. The best you can do to practice is listening to a TV programme or visit some place where the language is spoken. Congrat's! --Pedro 19:43, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Yep, you're right: I went back and changes things in the message before I pushed "save" and that was the bad thing to do...I am just sleepy today and I usually do better than that. I am actually ashame - but I must remember that I make mistakes in English. εγκυκλοπαίδεια* 20:11, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Good articles

I wanted you thank you for tagging History of Earth as a good article. I realize it’s not the type of article you really feel belongs here, and that you would still tag it nevertheless is quite gracious. (I do realize that an article can meet the good article criteria and still be eligible for deletion.) I have to admit that I did have some doubts when I first conceived the idea, and I only wrote a couple paragraphs to give a sense of the scope/direction of the article before asking several people if they thought it was appropriate for Misplaced Pages—only after they responded in the affirmative did I proceed. Anyway, I will continue to improve it and to do my best to minimize the issues you mentioned earlier. — Knowledge Seeker 08:27, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

I thought that I would drop by and make a suggestion. Responding individually to objections in an RfA can come across as argumentative to the brand new casual reader of that RfA. Instead of replying individually, I'd suggest taking opposition based upon edit-summaries as constructive criticism, and note in the comments section that the feedback has highlighted to you that the community takes them seriously and commit to using them purely descriptively going forward. A little translation help, please

Hi D'Juan - I was just thinking about sending this message to you when I ran across your RfA. I think you should get through it ok. Don't get too nervous about it. Anyway, I see you speak Portuguese. I was looking at the Tupolev Tu-95 and I noticed that the same page on the Portuguese wikipedia (pt:Tupolev Tu-95 Bear) has 3 very good images (pt:Image:Tu-95h 1.jpg, pt:Image:Tu-95-2.jpg & pt:Image:Tu95ms001.jpg) that are much better than the one image that was on the English page (Image:Tu95.jpg - very poor B&W image). I downloaded them to my computer and uploaded them to commons (I used that same file names as was on Portuguese wikipedia), and added them to the English Tu-95 page. I was wondering if you could review the "DP-Soviético" license in those image pages and make sure that it is essentially the same as the {{PD-USSR}} license in English. Also, could you tell me what the text in the 3rd image Image:Tu95ms001.jpg translates to? Thanks, and good luck on your RfA. --rogerd 02:19, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

RfA

Are you withdrawing? I was just reviewing your contribs and I think you stand a good chance... reconsider. -- Samir (the scope) 02:49, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Yea, please reconsider.....--rogerd 02:59, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
Yo Encyclopedist, I did the exact same thing- it is hard on the nerves, but give it time... CanadianCaesar The Republic Restored 03:11, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
What the hell! Why did you bloody withdraw?! Egad, don't! —BorgHunter (talk) 03:30, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
That RfA reminded me of why I left here in the first place.
Don't let a couple oppose votes get you down, man. You can't please all the people all the time. Yeah, I was disappointed by the six on mine, but I knew that getting 100% support is no small feat, especially now that the RfA process is getting tougher. You're going to encounter resistance. People are going to dislike you, or think you're not ready, or whatever. It's not something worth getting upset about. Just as not every person you meet is going to be your best friend, not all editors will like or even agree with you. Despite those few opposes you received, you have quite a fan base here (including me!) who were quite disappointed that you withdrew. I also was very, very saddened to see an essay I wrote (WP:ANOT) be used against such a fine editor as yourself in a RfA. Well, I respect your decision to withdraw it. Take it easy, man, and I'll see you around. If you want to contact me and let off some steam, there is a myriad of ways on my userpage. (If it's IMs you're after, be quick, I'm about to go to bed.) —BorgHunter (talk) 04:41, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
I don;'t think I'll be coming back to Misplaced Pages, and I worsened my chances after spewing my thoughts out to that awful John Reid.
All of you can take dibs on a barnstar on me, oppose or support. Thanks to all of you, I would send out messages, but I'll not waste time editing here anymore.

My RFA

Thank you for your recent vote on my RFA. While the nomination failed, I was rather expecting it due to the big lapse between registration and recent edits. Anywho, if you have any suggestions as to how I could improve so as to hopefully succeed next time, please let me know! Thanks! —akghetto  07:49, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Hola

I'm sorry for not replying back earlier. I'm moving to a new appartment and life is a bit shaken up currently. ¡Muchas gracias por la estrella! Es la primera estrella que alguien me da y por ello la aprecio bastante. ¡Saludos! -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ 13:09, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Come back

Hey, you submitted your RfA on an impulse and you withdrew on an impulse. You never gave a lot of your supporters a chance to show their support. You should know that you didn't really do yourself any lasting harm either. Take a breather, read these 1, 2, do some editing, and do an RfA again in a few weeks. Cheers, NoSeptember 13:58, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

I suggest reporting any suspicious activity to User:Roitr/sockpuppetry so new bots and IPs can be tracked and banned on sight. --DmitryKo 23:15, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:James2.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:James2.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear.

Thank you. Shyam 20:53, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Another come back message

I don't really know you that well, but I hate to see you leave over something as trivial as one user's comments. You've contributed so much to the project. Would be great to have you back. -- Samir (the scope) 03:26, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out
Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Misplaced Pages to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Misplaced Pages's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
Stress Alerts
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
The last AC meeting (full log)
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.

Military history WikiProject Newsletter, Issue I

The Military history WikiProject Newsletter
Issue I - March 2006
Project news
From the Coordinators

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Military history WikiProject's newsletter! We hope that this new format will help members—especially those who may be unable to keep up with some of the rapid developments that tend to occur—find new groups and programs within the project that they may wish to participate in.

Please consider this inital issue to be a prototype; as always, any comments and suggestions are quite welcome, and will help us improve the newsletter in the coming months.

Esperanza Newsletter #2

Barnstar Brigade
The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Misplaced Pages, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Misplaced Pages has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
Stress Alerts
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
The last AC meeting (full log)
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Misplaced Pages. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

My RfA

I noticed you supported my last nomination to become an admin. If you would please review my current nomination I would be very appreciative. Thanks. Nick Catalano contrib 15:41, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

Fake barn stars

Can you please confirm if you awarded User:The_Man's_Plans any barn stars. It is strongly suspected that he is misrepresenting himself.
