The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is an upcoming 2013 American dystopian thriller/action-adventure film based on Suzanne Collins' novel Catching Fire, the second installment in The Hunger Games trilogy. The sequel to the 2012 film The Hunger Games, it is scheduled to be released on November 22, 2013. The film is directed by Francis Lawrence, with a screenplay from Simon Beaufoy and Michael Arndt. Jennifer Lawrence reprises her role as Katniss Everdeen, with Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, and Willow Shields also reprising their roles.

Plot

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a Victor's Tour of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow (Donald Sutherland) prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that will change Panem forever.

Pre-production

Lionsgate announced that a film adaptation of Catching Fire will be released as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on November 22, 2013, as a sequel to the film adaptation of The Hunger Games, with principal photography to take place in September 2012. The shooting timeframe was co-ordinated between Lionsgate and 20th Century Fox, in order to allow time for star Jennifer Lawrence to shoot X-Men: Days of Future Past, the sequel to Fox's X-Men: First Class, in January 2013. The success of The Hunger Games has become Jennifer Lawrence's breakout role, but she admitted that it took her three days until she accepted the role of Katniss Everdeen. In an interview, she said that "the size of the decision was terrifying." Known for doing indie movies as opposed to studio movies, her mother called her a hypocrite for previously saying that, "the size of the movie doesn't matter", convincing her to take the role, which she now does not regret.

On April 10, 2012, it was announced that Gary Ross, director of The Hunger Games, would not return due to a 'tight' and 'fitted' schedule. On April 19, 2012, it was announced that Francis Lawrence was offered the director position for the film. According to sources, the adaptation must be done filming by December 2012 to fit Jennifer Lawrence's schedule. Lionsgate officially announced Francis Lawrence as the director for Catching Fire on May 3, 2012. Two days later, it was reported that Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, Little Miss Sunshine) is in talks to re-write the script for Catching Fire. On May 24, 2012, the film was renamed The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Arndt was confirmed as the new writer of the script. The film will feature sequences filmed in the IMAX format.

Casting

In July 2012, it was announced that Jena Malone would portray Johanna Mason, and that Philip Seymour Hoffman would portray Plutarch Heavensbee. Following this up, in August 2012, it was released that Lynn Cohen would be cast as Mags, Alan Ritchson was cast as Gloss. Sam Claflin was officially cast as Finnick Odair on August 22, 2012. Jeffrey Wright was cast as Beetee on September 7, 2012.

Filming

Shooting will first take place in and around metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia and now it has moved to Hawaii. In October 2012, composer James Newton Howard confirmed that he will return to score the film. In an interview with MTV, Josh Hutcherson confirmed scenes in the film will use IMAX cameras by stating, "they're shooting, I think, all the stuff in the arena is going to be IMAX".Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page). On November 1, 2012, it was confirmed that Francis Lawrence will be back to direct the two final movies.
