In a small town of Chamberlain, Maine, teenager Carrie White (Chloe Grace Moretz), is a lonely and awkward high school girl who is constanly bullied by her peers led by the popular mean girl, Chris Hargensen (Portia Doubleday), at school and abused by the hands of her religious mother, Margaret White (Julianne Moore) at home. After participanting in mean prank towards Carrie, Chris' best friend, Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde), regrets their action and tries to make amends with Carrie by asking her popular boyfriend, Tommy Ross (newcomer Ansel Elgort), to take Carrie to the prom. Meanwhile, Carrie starts to form a friendship with her gym teacher, Miss Desjardin (Judy Greer), who tries in vain to protect Carrie from Chris and her peers.

Meanwhile, Carrie starts discovering her strange telekinetic powers, that seem to have appeared after the trauma caused by the prank.

However, Chris, her boyfriend, Billy Nolan (Alex Russell), and their friends hatch a plan to humiliate Carrie at the prom. However, Carrie uses her telekinetic power for revenge.

Production

In May 2011, MGM and Screen Gems announced they were producing a film remake of Carrie. MGM and Screen Gems hired Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to write the script for the new film with "a more faithful adaption" of King's novel. Aguirre-Sacasa previously adapted King’s epic The Stand into comic-book form in 2008.

Upon hearing about it, King stated "The real question is why, when the original was so good?" He also suggested Lindsay Lohan for the main role, saying that "it would certainly be fun to cast". Actress Sissy Spacek also expressed her opinion about Lohan as Carrie White, stating that she "was like, 'Oh my God, she's really a beautiful girl' and so I was very flattered that they were casting someone to look like me instead of the real Carrie described in the book. It's gonna be real interesting." In March 2012, the role of Carrie was offered to Chloe Moretz.

Julianne Moore will star as Carrie's mother Margaret White, and Gabriella Wilde as Sue Snell. Alex Russell and Broadway actor Ansel Elgort are also in the main cast. Judy Greer will play the gym teacher, Miss Desjardin. Portia Doubleday will play mean girl Chris Hargensen.

Kimberly Peirce is directing this new adaptation.

The film is set for release on March 15, 2013.

Sony Pictures held a "First Look" event at the New York Comic Con on October 13, 2012. It was followed by a panel session with several members of the cast and crew.
