Mahato (Template:Lang-bn)is a surname mostly used by the "Kurmi" caste people of Jharkhand and West Bengal. The Kurmi's are mostly agriculturalists with landed properties, with very few landless agricultural labourers among them. The governments of India and West Bengal both have classified the Kurmis under Other Backward Classes since 1994.The surname "Mahato" is used by some other castes. eg-Koeri (Jharkhand, Bihar), Nunia (Bihar, West Bengal), Bedia (West Bengal), Bhumij (West Bengal).
Religion
The Mahato's (Kurmi's of Chotanagpure area) are served by the Utkala Brahmins, Rarhi Brahmins and Tirhut Brahmins. They are worshippers of Shiva, Chandi and Surya. During the worship of Shiva, they sacrifice goats.
