Upleta is a city and a municipality in Rajkot district in the Indian state of Gujarat.

Geography

Upleta is located at 21°44′N 70°17′E / 21.73°N 70.28°E / 21.73; 70.28. It has an average elevation of 39 metres (127 feet).

Upleta is a town, located about 19 km from Dhoraji, in the Rajkot District of Gujarat, on the banks of the Moj River. With its high fort wall, huge bastions, gates, small ghats and skyline of the buildings, Upleta is quite picturesque. Some major attractions are a mosque, a Jain temple, and a temple of Mojeshwar Mahadev. It was famous for its water-supply tank in old Darbargadh, because it was unique for its era. The Darbargadh is enclosed within a fortified campus. Upleta has a high-quality drainage system, which helps prevent flooding during monsoon season. The city is also well known for its high-quality road system.

In the middle of the city, there is a statue of Maharaja Bhagvadsinghji. This area is called "bapu na bavla chowk".

  • In early days after independence day and until the late 1990s, Upleta was a major shopping hub for the several nearby villages, where they came and shopped for their groceries and other livelihood materials. It was also famous for its clothing shops. Villagers right from places like Kharachiya, Khajurda, Khatli, Kolki, Bhayavadar, Sodvadar, Timbdi, Roghel, Khijadia, Sajdiyali, Dhank,Nagvadar,Gadhethad, Khirsara, Chitravad, Charel, Arni, Supedi, Moti Marad, Nani Marad and several other villages used to come here and shop before other smaller towns were developed.

Business areas

  • Main vegetable market is located near Gandhi Chowk which is well known for major attraction during Diwali.
  • Katleri Bazar is the favorite place for shoppers from nearby villagers for shopping of various household items.
  • Khadi Bhandar is a shop for hand woven items as khadi- described by Mahatma Gandhi as Swadeshi cloths. It is located behind vegetable market near Gandhi Chowk.
  • Upleta is well known for good Indian clothing in low prices. All types of fashionable Indian dresses can be purchased here also there are Jeweler's shop & jewellery market located nearby.
  • Pancheshwar Mahadeva Temple is located on the way to Patanvava.
  • Old Bus stand and Rajmarg are the places for sight seeing in Upleta.
  • 'Bapu na Bavla' Chowk known for Snacks, FastFood & Special Bhajiya (Pakodas) which are famous in here.

Rajkot and Porbandar are the nearest airports.

Road

Upleta is on National Highway 8B. It connects Upleta with Rajkot, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Gondal and Jetpur. State transport corporation and private bus operators provide bus services.

Railway

Upleta railway station lies is on the Wansjaliya-Jetalsar railway line that connects with Rajkot, the nearest large city. Wansjaliya railway junction is west of Upleta and connects with Porbandar, Jamnagar, Okha and Dwarka. Dhoraji railway station and Jetalsar railway junction are east of Upleta and connect with Rajkot. The railway line was metre gauge like all other tracks in Saurashtra and converted to broad gauge in 2011.

Bhayavadar, Upleta, Moti Paneli, Dhoraji etc. places, that are known for onion and other agricultural products, benefit from the coverted railway gauge in transportation of agricultural goods from this area.
