nn-bio

The wife and I own two of these things. The older one is named "Haggis".

I'm Bunchofgrapes. If you like Patrick O'Brian then you might know where I took the name from. For the most part, it's meaningless. You may call me Grapes if "Bunchofgrapes" is too much typing.

I'm interested in a lot of things, but my main contributions are to food articles, where I'm especially drawn to the history and science behind everyday edibles. I also try to contribute to Featured Article Candidates discussions.

I'm a computer programmer by trade, but I have little or no interest in contributing in that area. I am a U.S citizen, living in Oregon, male, born in 1970. I earned two computer science engineering degrees from Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York, in the early 1990s.

According to Interiot's tool, when the toolserver stopped replicating the English Misplaced Pages on 12 April 2006, I had 6846 edits. I started editing in August of 2005.

User:IBook of the Revolution is my stepson.

Significant (or not) Contributions

(Most recent first)

  • I'm now working on Nell Gwyn. Which was what I was starting to work on before I got distracted by Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Now then... how do you write a biography?
  • Ridecruft! The Coney Island Parachute Jump. I can't believe it didn't have an article already.
  • Theatre Royal, Drury Lane (no, you can't eat it) is now a Featured Article... all too easy. (Looks around suspiciously.)
  • I'm responsible for most of the cheesecruft in Category:Swedish cheeses.
  • Butter is a Featured article. Today's Featured Article on Jan 17, 2006. About 360 edits during the day; butter is a lot funnier than black pepper but not quite as funny as cheese. Here's the diffs for the day; for some reason, they are a bit of a mess.
  • Black pepper. Now a Featured Article. It was Today's Featured Article on December 3, 2005. It had 96 edits that day (see, black pepper isn't as funny as cheese). Here's the diff for that day; I have to admit a few factual errors were fixed, the worst of which was featuring a picture of a plant that wasn't actually black pepper. I created long pepper while working on black pepper, as well.
  • Cheese. My first love, my first Featured Article. It was Today's Featured Article on November 4, 2005. It got nearly 500 edits during that day; here's the final before & after diff. I've also put some work in on casu marzu cheese and its good friend the cheese fly, articles which you should not read, under any circumstances.

The curmudgeonly Wikipedian asks

This is not me. I'm much seedier.
  • Why do people get so excited about starting new pages? Fixing existing, awful pages seems far more important to Misplaced Pages's quality. Yet every user page has their proud list of "Pages I Created." Stop it! (Maybe I'll give User:Geogre a pass on this one, though.)
  • What can we do to get more people to really "get" Citing their sources? Our open "hey everyone, edit the page now!" needs a little more browbeating about that, somehow. I imagine there's no way to really fix it, but I can dream.
