Senthamizhan Seeman(Template:Lang-ta) is an Indian film actor, writer, director, politician and activist in Tamil Nadu. He is the Chief Coordinator of the organisation "Naam Thamizhar Iyakkam" which turned as a political party "Naam Thamizhar Katchi" in May 2010.
Early life and Background
Seeman was born in Sivagangai district in South Tamil Nadu to Mr. Senthamizhan and Mrs. Annammal Senthamizhan. He married K. Kayalvizhi, daughter of Late Mr. K. Kalimuthu (former speaker of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly) and Mrs. Manohari, on September 8, 2013 in the presence of Tamil Nationalist leader Pazha. Nedumaran and many other Tamil leaders and celebrities. The ceremony was held according to Tamil traditions at the YMCA grounds, Nandanam, Chennai.
Film Career
1997-2000
Seeman took up film direction as a career after being inspired by the films of his mentor, Bharathi Raja and also the work of Manivannan. Seeman started his career by directing Panchalankurichi, a village action film starring Prabhu and Madhubala. He collaborated with actor Prabhu again in Iniyavalae, a romantic film also featuring Suvalakshmi, Gouthami and Keerthi Reddy. His third film Veeranadai with Sathyaraj and Kushboo after that he took a long break from films.
2006-2013
In 2006, he came back with a successful film Thambi with actor Madhavan. The film carried the message that violence does not pay, and is not the answer to the problems of today. Seeman turned actor with the film Pori where he played the role of a Malaysian Business man. The same year he directed the love story Vaazhthugal again with Madhavan and Bhavana, with every single word used in the movie being written in pure Tamil. However the film failed at the box office and since then Seeman has only acted in films including critically acclaimed roles in Pallikoodam and Evano Oruvan. In 2009, Seeman was among the 10 directors who starred in Rasu Madhavaran's Mayandi Kudumbathar, a huge entertainer in the box office.
In 2013, Seeman played a lead role in Director and his mentor Manivannan's Nagaraja Cholan MA, MLA(sequel to the critically acclaimed Amaidhi Padai), the latter's 50th and last film as a director.
Politics and Activism
Bearing little political affinity, for most of his early life, Seeman was a vociferous campaigner for the rights of the Tamil People and was a devout supporter of Periyar's Self Respect Movement. He is a also a massive sympathizer of the Sri Lankan Tamil Cause and is a noteworthy acquaintance of Velupillai Prabhakaran the leader of the founder and the leader of the Tamil Tigers Movement in Sri Lanka, being one of the very few persons from India to have convened with him directly. A powerful orator, Mr Seeman was drawing huge crowds from the day he addressed his first meeting on the Sri Lankan Tamil plight just as the war began to escalate in Sri Lanka towards the end of 2008.
Seeman along with several other Tamil activists gathered on 18th May 2009, coinciding the end of the Sri Lankan Civil War at Madurai to form the Naam Tamilar Iyakkam, as a social outfit. One year later, on 18th May 2010, The organisation would later turn into a political party renamed as the Naam Tamilar Katchi.
2011 Anti-Congress Campaigning
In 2011, Seeman was on the fore-front among other Tamil activists and nationalist leaders campaigning against the Congress Party in the State Assembly elections, for their alleged role in the genocide of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. He was instrumental in bringing about the crushing and humiliating defeat of the Congress-associated DMK front. The DMK government had come down heavily on Mr Seeman and arrested him under NSA in order not to have him challenge their hold on power. But successfully withstanding significant time constraint, arrests and political threats, Seeman campaigned in 59 of the 63 places the Congress party were contesting, and the party were defeated in all of those constituencies except for one. Seeman was successful in defeating Congress bigwigs like Mani Shankar Aiyar, E. V. K. S. Elangovan and Thangabalu. Wherever he went he was watched by people in numbers ranging from 5000 to 25000 as compared to the rest of the political parties which only attract a few 100s in their meetings. Seeman is a passionate orator. When he describes the sufferings of the Tamils in Sri Lanka, people are moved and emotionally aroused. One Congress candidate wrote to Seeman to avoid his anti Congress campaign in her constituency. But Seeman politely turned down the request and asked the candidate to quit Congress to get his full support.
Seeman's efforts were vigorously backed and supplemented by by various other popular leaders and activists such as Nedumaran, Thirumurugan, Vaiko, Thamizharuvi Manian etc.
2012 to present
Since the 2011 Assembly elections, Seeman and his party has been actively involved in various Tamil causes such as the Anti-Nuclear Power plant protests in Kudankulam or the continued attacks on Tamil fishermen perpetuated by the Sri Lankan Navy that has claimed the lives of over 800 fishermen.
In March 2013, Seeman along with his Attorney T.Chandrasekar journeyed to Europe primarily to attend the 22nd UNHRC Sessions when a resolution was being passed by the United States against the Sri Lankan government. He toured various countries in the continent delivering speeches and participating in demonstrations in Geneva, Paris, Wuppertal, Copenhagen where he was well received by the Tamil diaspora.
