He returned to Sydney in 1999 as Program Director of Radio 2GB. That role coincided with the companies acquisition of both Alan Jones and Ray Hadley.
Sponsors reacted angrily, with both BBC Worldwide and publisher Pan Macmillan, which provided the prizes, expressing their shock at the quiz, saying they would never have allowed their brands to be part of it had they been aware.
Chris was then appointed by the John Singleton led Board to host the Afternoon program from noon, a position he took on whilst programming the station.

In 2010 Chris was suspended again for misbehaving with female staff at the station's Christmas Party and returned to air in February 2011.
He admitted to having problems with binge drinking.
Later that year he coordinated a major rally against the newly introduced Carbon Tax at Federal Parliament House, drawing 32 bus-loads of listeners from Sydney and Melbourne. He followed this up with several other rallies in conjunction with the Consumer's Taxpayer's Association.

Chris has been described as everything from the worst of the shock jocks to a wildcard and is currently in his 13th year at 2GB. His program has been the number 1 show on all bands at midday in Sydney for 9 years...

The Australian Communications and Media Authority found the licensee of 2GB (Macquarie Radio Network) breached the Commercial Radio Code of Practice and Guidelines 2010 requirement that material broadcast must not offend generally accepted standards of decency, stating “offensive, in very bad taste, and that it should not have been broadcast”.<ref>http://www.theaustralian.com.au/media/acma-censures-shock-jock-chris-smith/story-e6frg996-1226217969961</ref>
