Ismaikel "Mike" Pérez Pérez (b. 1985 in Sancti Spíritus, Cuba) is a Cuban-Irish professional boxer born in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba and now living and fighting out of Cork, Ireland after defecting. Best known for winnning the World Junior Amateur Championships at light heavyweight in Jeju in 2004. Perez also, won the International Prizefighter tournament. He is currently going through the process of obtaining Irish citizenship.
Amateur career
In 2004 at the Junior Championships the Southpaw beat Englishman Danny Price in the semifinals and Russian Nikolay Pavlyukov 38:16 in the final.
He later lost to compatriot Yoan Pablo Hernandez and Yusiel Napoles at 178 lbs but beat Kenneth Egan and Constantin Bejeranu.
He went up to 201 lbs but had problems with the world class domestic competition like 2006 champion Luis Ortiz who beat him in 2006 (he returned the favor in 2007) and especially by Osmay Acosta who beat him 2007 in the National Final.
Professional
He, along with Alexei Acosta and Luis Garcia defected to Ireland in 2007.
In 2008, he turned professional in Cork under Cuban coach Nicholas Cruz (Hernández) who came to Ireland in 1988. He calls himself Mike "The Rebel" Perez.
Perez has a professional record of 19 fights and 19 wins including 12 knock-outs.
On 7 May 2011, Perez won the International Prizefighter tournament, beating Kertson Manswell and American Tye Fields in the final to take home a £32,000 prize. After the fight, Perez stated the victory would earn him a world title shot in the near future.
He then fought and won against American journeyman Zack Page in a rematch on November 9, 2011, in York Hall, Bethnal Green, London.
Perez made his United States debut on 30 December 2011, against the Nigerian heavyweight boxer Friday Ahunanya. The location for the fight was Morongo Casino, Resort & Spa, Cabazon, California. Perez won a unanimous decision, by winning all of the rounds, on the judges' scorecards. He did not fight in 2012. He returned to the ring in 2013, on the undercard of Wladimir Klitschko vs. Francesco Pianeta. He meet Travis Walker. He won a 10 round decision. On November 2nd he will make his HBO debut. He will fight against undefeated Russian Magomed Abdusalomov at Madison Square Garden.
