t a press conference held today, Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar formally launched plans for the establishment of the University of Gibraltar. The Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo QC, and the Minister for Education, Gilbert Licudi QC, gave details of the University and confirmed that the University is set to open for business on 1 September 2015. |

The former St Christopher’s School site at Europa Point will be the core hub of the University. It will include a number of iconic buildings which lend themselves perfectly for use as a university. These will be refurbished with additional facilities built within the site. |

There will be four faculties at the University as follows: |
|
|
• Health Studies and Sports Science |
|
|
• Business which will include specialisms in Accounting and Finance, Law as well as ICT |
|
|
• Life and Earth Sciences and Gibraltar/Mediterranean Studies |
|
|
• Tourism and Hospitality |
|
|
The four faculties will provide a series of undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in collaboration with internationally recognized universities as well as locally developed courses including courses for qualifications in Gibraltar Tax and in Gibraltar Law. The University will also be a centre for research in key areas associated with Gibraltar’s culture, environment and heritage. |

Professor Malcolm Jones |
|
|
Graduated from Dental School in Cardiff in 1973 and was first alumnus to become Dean of School (1999 - 2006). Was Pro Vice Chancellor for Health in Cardiff University (2006 - 2010) overseeing strategy for all six health related schools in the University. Concurrently, was Pro Vice Chancellor for Estates: leading on development of a strategic plan which included a new Med School Building at the Heath Campus and a new Research Institute on Main/Maindy campus. Member of Senate and Council of University etc. Emeritus professor at Cardiff University has received a variety of awards including a Medical Degree awarded by the Latvian Academy of Medicine in 2000 (in recognition of work done in assisting the rebuilding of Dental Education in that country through the 90's supported by EU grants); and Faculty Gold Medal of RCS in 2009, for services to the profession over his career. Retired at end of 2010. Following his retirement, he has assisted the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in developing research links with some chosen European Universities. |

Daniella Tilbury is the first Gibraltarian to be recognized with a Marie Curie Professorship by European Commission. She has held multiple university leadership roles in the UK, Hong Kong and Australia as well as served as an advisor for newly established universities and innovative ventures in the sector. She is currently a Dean, ProVice Chancellor with institutional leadership responsibilities at the University of Gloucestershire, UK. In her current post, she is responsible for strategic, financial as well as operational performance of a key University portfolio. Daniella has been shortlisted for a national university leadership award and is competing against the Vice Chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University at ceremony to be held in early November. |
