She has described herself as being a "nostalgia whore," who loves to dwell in the past, romanticize memories, talk about her childhood, fate, and how she got to where she is now. She states that she didn't start seriously listening to music until 2007. Though her face was fully revealed in her music video for Catch, she states she is not comfortable with sharing too much information with the public and prefers to keep her face under wraps at most times. On why she likes the macabre, she states that she is expressing her Jungian shadow-self. She has said that anxiety has been a constant struggle for her to stay calm and make decisions from a grounded place.
Allie X started her career under the name of Allie Hughes in Toronto around 2006. She performed Indie, Melodramatic Pop, and Pop. In her live shows as Allie Hughes she incorporated a theatrical element into them. In 2008, she was in How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? (Canada), but was eliminated after two episodes. She called it a traumatic but thrilling experience. In spite of her local success in Toronto, she states she wasn't happy with her sound and that she had to spend years learning how to produce and learning about sound design, so that she could reproduce sound she heard in her head. In reference to her melodies, she describes them as being, "soaring pop, borderline theatrical Disney," while her lyrics, "always seem to be darker." She has described her songwriting process as being like a, "science experiment: you take this person's brain and that person's brain and you put them in a room for hours and see what they make out of nothing."
Influences include Kate Bush, Rufus Wainright, Jens Lekman, and Janelle Monáe.
In July 2013, she moved to Los Angeles. She also began working with producers such as Cirkut and Billboard. Her spinning GIF's have attained some level of notoriety.
