The incumbent, Democrat Phil Bredesen, won his party's nomination to run for re-election. As of July 17, Bredesen has an approval rating of 57%. Governor Bredesen's most serious opposition in the general election is Republican state senator Jim Bryson of Franklin. Another Republican candidate, Mark Albertini, was arrested in Knoxville on July 21, 2006, on charges of public intoxication following a GOP rally.
