Threading comments on talk pages.

Hi Steve,

You seem to have some difficulty understanding the way that threading comments work on talk pages. Talk pages are not flat chronological linear discussions; if they were, we wouldn't use indentation. Here is an example of a multithreaded conversation:

Hi everybody, I'm back. --Forrest 12:00

Hi Forrest. How was your fourth of July? --Bob 01:15
Why is the fourth of July special? --Roderick 02:00
We Americans celebrate it as our independence day, Rod. --Forrest 03:20
It's the day we got free of you Brits, of course. --Dave 04:00
It was good Bob, how was yours? --Forrest 03:25
Pretty good, fireworks were awesome. --Bob 04:00
OMG I love fireworks. Ours were AWESOME this year! --Betty 04:10
What was so awesome about them, Betty? --Forrest 05:40
The smiley faces!!!! --Betty 06:00
Yeah mine were pretty good too, Bob. --Forrest 05:45
Hey honey, give me a call when you get home OK? --Mom 01:30
Ok mom, will do. --Forrest 03:30
Hey mom, I just tried calling but no answer. IM me when you see this. --Forrest 05:50
Hey Forrest. Welcome back. Will you have those reports ready for me today? --TheBoss 01:45
Yeah boss, I'm almost done with them now, should be off to you before the end of the day. --Forrest 01:50

Some notable points in this conversation:

  • I replied to Roderick's 2-indented comment with a 3-indented comment, then five minutes later replied to Bob's 1-indented comment with a 2-indented comment under that. Then Dave later put his reply to Roderick above my earlier reply to Bob, despite posting later than me.
  • Similarly, I replied to Betty's 4-indented comment with a 5-indented comment, and then replied to Bob's 3-indented comment with my own 4-indented comment. Then much latter Betty put her response to me response above my lower reply to Bob, again despite chronology.
  • I replied to my mom later in the afternoon, twice, while I replied to my boss immediately mid-day. However, because my mom commented before my boss, my replies to her goes above my boss's comment, even though I commented after my boss did.

On Talk:Time, I posted TWO comments: one "I concur...", in response to Manus' "Yes but time..."; and another, "My only real objection...", in response to your earlier "The retroactive first sentence says...". You wrote what appears to be a reply to "I concur...", but put it indented under "My only real objection...". You say in your edit summary "Your move gives a false impression that your lower comment is a response to my comment", but it does not, if you understand how indentation works; my comment is indented with other replies to your first comment. Instead, your move gives a false impression that you are responding to my second comment, when by all appearances you seem to be intending to respond to my first comment (which I imagine you took to be the first paragraph of a two-paragraph comment, but it is not; they're two separate comments).

Now that you've outdented your comment entirely, it looks like you're just starting fresh outside of the threads, and that's fine. But the way you originally posted broke the threading. "Proper chronological order" is not proper, because Wiki talk pages are not strictly chronological, they are threaded. --Pfhorrest (talk) 05:34, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

I appreciate all of that, and as you well know Ive been editing here for ten years now, and know full well what indenting is. More to the point, I know that indenting has a purpose secondary to chronology - comments are primarily ordered chronologically. I understand that I may have indented my comment, and that gave you a false impression, and I apologise for that. But chronology is primary, and readers can decide what comments respond to which other comments. Its true that indents serve to indicate these kinds of responses, but before they do that indents simply indicate that a subsequent comment is separate from an above comment. Response

The instances where "God" was changed to "Yahweh" refer exclusively to the Judeo-Christian god, so the switch was made to reflect that. Considering there are other conceptions of gods, many of which go by "God" in everyday conversation amongst sharers of such conceptions, the change is intended to eliminate vagueness and establish a neutral point of view. - 69.85.216.188 (talk) 05:16, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Scoop (software)

WP:EXPLAIN

Hello! Would you object to using WP:EXPLAIN as a shortcut for the policy Misplaced Pages:Editing policy#Be helpful: explain? The redirect was originally created as a shortcut for a similar page, Misplaced Pages:Explain your views, until it was merged into Misplaced Pages:Talk page guidelines. The shortcut, used afterwards for Misplaced Pages:Explanationism, has few incoming links, and could be substituted with WP:EXPLISM. I've boldly done so, but if you have any objections, feel free to revert. Thank you.--SGCM (talk) 19:28, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

WP:PRIME

When you began discussing moving this well-used redirect, did it not occur to you to drop a line to the person that created it?

More importantly, that redirect was around for a very long time and was much used. Apparently, the old uses have been tidied up, which is great, but what about all the Wikipedians who continue to use it for the old use? How do you propose keeping on top of people inadvertently misusing it with the result of others being confused? --Dweller (talk) 01:26, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

I could use your input!

Hello, I am a new editor on Misplaced Pages. I am interested in Alternative Medicine. I noticed the Burzynski Clinic article, so I tried to add some information to it.I tried to change the first paragraph, but Everything I changed was deleted several times, even though I sourced it. The first paragraph now has no sourcing and their definition of an "antineoplaston", is incorrect, so I tried to find the source and couldn't. So, I added the American Cancer Society's definition.(please see the article)I was told first that the American Cancer Society couldn't be used because it would make people think that the treatment was endorsed ( even though the American Cancer society is already listed as a source). I can't remember the other reason I was given. I tried to post on Dispute Resolution, but it was closed because two of the editors wanted to continue on Talk. We are not getting anywhere and there are about 5 editors that are of the same mindset. Is there anything I can do about this? Thank you!!Docia49 (talk) 17:46, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Your edits to Land

I have reverted your edits to Land, as they seem to be generally incorrect, unencyclopedic, and not supported by the source provided. Specifically, land is not "dirt" (it includes a wide range of materials, primarily rock), it is not uniformly horizontal (following the curve of the planet's surface, and having a wide range of inclines. The phrase "foundation actual to human living" is unclear, and there is no sourced support for land having any "psychic" qualities, whatever that means. Also, I see no reason to hide the referenced material from the lede, stating that land, "sometimes referred to as dry land, is the solid surface of the Earth, that is not covered by water". Cheers! bd2412 T 14:40, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Intel (disambiguation)

The article Intel (disambiguation) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Although there is nothing very wrong with having this page, I've already implemented a better disambiguation alternative: Hatnote disambiguation. (See WP:DAB.) As such, this page is redundant. Why should the reader spend a click and come here when he or she can simply go straight to the disambiguated destination?

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. SF edit-a-thons on March 7 and 8

ArtAndFeminism (3/7) and International Women's Day (3/8)!

Dear fellow Wikipedian,

In celebration of WikiWomen's History Month, the SF Bay Area Misplaced Pages community has two events in early March -- please consider attending!

First, we have an ArtAndFeminism edit-a-thon, which will take place at the Kadist Art Foundation from 12 noon to 6pm on Saturday, March 7. We'll be one of many sites worldwide participating in this edit-a-thon on March 7th. So join us as we help improve Misplaced Pages's coverage of women artists and their works!

Second, we will be celebrating International Women's Day with the International Women's Day edit-a-thon on Sunday, March 8 from 1pm to 5pm at the Wikimedia Foundation. Our editing focus will be on women, of course!

I hope to see you there! Rosiestep (talk) - via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:06, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Parallel History Project

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Parallel History Project requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, and welcome to Misplaced Pages. This is a notice that the page you created was tagged as a test page under section G2 of the criteria for speedy deletion and has been or soon may be deleted. Speedy deletion nomination of Hard fort

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, and welcome to Misplaced Pages. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Hard fort requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Misplaced Pages:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Article talk pages are not forums.

Please read WP:NOTFORUM - if you persist in abusing Talk:Bitcoin as a forum for bizarre rants, I shall report the matter, and ask that you be blocked from editing. AndyTheGrump (talk) 00:07, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

A reminder regarding editing restrictions imposed by ArbCom

As you no doubt remember, as a consequence of a 2010 ArbCom case concerning you, you were explicitly required to cite sources for all content you add to articles. Since this restriction has never been lifted your recent creation of unsourced articles on Snap (military) and Expressive power clearly violate the ArbCom ruling. I suggest that you bear this in mind in future, since I suspect that given your past history the community is unlikely to show much more patience with you. AndyTheGrump (talk) 19:16, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

Article stubbing is not a crime, as it takes time to write a global compendium project. I understand that you may not happy there in Bristol, but if the aristos-kleptos money they pay you was worth a nickel they would have built that nice and easy to engineer walking bridge to Paris by now and have hired actual Europeans to do it, (jobs!). Rather than mooching off the Free (democratic honor, try it) people's of the world, and the work we provide, try the opposite. -Stevertigo (t | c, ed. 2002) 14:30, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
Stevertigo, if you can't immediately add sources to Snap (military) and Expressive power they may qualify for speedy deletion under WP:CSD#G5. Your ban does not allow you to add unsourced material. Let us know if you plan to address this. Thank you, EdJohnston (talk) 15:01, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
