In 1997, director Ridley Scott was attached to the project with Arnold Schwarznegger in the lead role. However, Warner Bros. dropped the project due to a budget that escalated to $108 million. In 2002, director Michael Bay was attached to the project with Will Smith in the lead role, but the project failed to advance. In fall of 2005, the project regained momentum with director Francis Lawrence at the helm.
