Mojave is a town located in Kern County, California. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,836.
Aeronautic History
As home to Edwards Air Force Base, Mojave has been the site of many aeronautic milestones, including the first supersonic flight and the first landing of the Space Shuttle. Kern County is also the home of the first inland spaceport in the United States, the Mojave Spaceport.
The Mojave Spaceport was the location of the first private spaceflight, the launch of SpaceShipOne on June 21, 2004.
After winning the Ansari X Prize, Burt Rutan quipped that the isolation of the Mojave Desert fosters invention. "Innovation is what we do here," he said, "because there's not much else to do in Mojave."
