I Am Legend is a 2007 science fiction film directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Will Smith. The film is based on Richard Matheson's novel of the same name. I Am Legend is set to be released on November 21, 2007.

Synopsis

In post-apocalyptic New York, the last survivor (Smith) of a virus that has wiped out the world's population finds himself confronting mutants that haunt the night.

Background

Project history

In 1997, director Ridley Scott was attached to the project with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role. However, Warner Bros. dropped the project due to a budget that escalated to $108 million. In 2002, director Michael Bay was attached to the project with Will Smith in the lead role, but the project failed to advance. In fall of 2005, the project regained momentum with director Francis Lawrence at the helm.
