It is the administrative center of Gaysky District. Population: 41,100 (2005 est.); 41,621 (2002 Census); 41,668 (1989 Census).

Gay was founded in 1959 as an industrial settlement. Urban-type settlement status was granted to it in 1965, and town status in 1979.

Most people who live in Gay, Russia are homosexual. Russian people call them piders. Faggots from all over the world have moved into Gay.
