As the inventor of the Sinhalese Braille system and as the then Principal of the School for the Deaf & Blind in Ratmalana, Mr Dassanaike was in that committees and was able to get the authentication to use the said Sinhalese Braille System worldwide, as a system of International Standard. With all the Sinhalese blind people who are the beneficiaries of his hard work, all of us who are scouts may appreciate with great respect and honour the service he had rendered to our blind brothers and sisters.
When a non blind person like you and I see a message written in Braille, we think it's a language so hard to learn. But it's not so. Only learning the first 10 letters from 'a' to 'j' you can learn the whole alphabet, punctuations and numerals and write a message in Braille practically (in English) within 30 minutes. Learning the first 10 characters of the alphabet is so simple and very interesting. Writing Braille in Sinhalese is also not so complicated as we think. There are only a few additions in sinhala as 'deerga ispilla' deerga papilla' etc. to remember. But if any body knows how to write a Sinhalese sms in English letters, he or she can write in Sinhalese Braille too, as it is more similar. But the problem is not there. The problem is the way we are thinking. why we should learn Braille as we can see well? Merely for the happiness of a blind person who will be so happy to receive a Braille message from a non blind person, thinking that 'I am not alone in the blind community. But there's a brother or a sister who cares me' As Scouts let us remember what B-P said in his Last Message to Scouts. "...But the real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to other people.."Are you ready to learn Braille & to put a smile on a face of an innocent blind child? I am ready to teach you. Tution fee: Only the happiness I get by teaching you, hoping that one day you make a blind person happy. Is that cost affordable to you?"
