Our Lady of Guadalupe

A bit puzzled that you reverted my change to Our Lady of Guadalupe about Juanito being analogous to Johnny. Juan -> Juanito, John -> Johnny. Seems like a pretty straightforward parallel to me. I just thought it might provide a bit of context for those who don't know any Spanish. -- Andyluciano 22:58, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Image requests

Hi, In response to your offer of pictures of chemicals, here are a few I don't have access to:

Be careful, these compounds are all expensive, and several are hygroscopic! Let me know if you have any requests you think I might help with. Thanks again for your offer, Walkerma 05:57, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

I was going to request any platinum group metal compounds, but it seems like Martin has beaten me to it! Sodium amide would also be a nice one to have, but read the safety section in the article first! and I suppose I don't even have to ask for Raney nickel... Physchim62 (talk) 09:23, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Looking at the WP:Chem worklist, I notice some oxides I don't have access to: Oxides of Be (toxic!!!), Sc, Y, La, Ho, Lu, Th. Used to have Sc and Y in my lab, but used them all up! Cheers, Walkerma 16:45, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

Whatever you're mad about

As a native Spanish-speaker I do take offence for your statement above. Please be more careful when you say such things in a public forum. -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ | Esperanza 00:48, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
Well I am a native speaker of English and I think that is ugly. No need to take offense, yeesh. We all have our likes and dislikes. I speak Spanish, I think it is great, I do not think it sounds pretty. εγκυκλοπαίδεια* (talk) 16:53, 10 December 2005 (UTC) 00:51, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
Tienes una vida muy interesante...acabo de leer tu pagina. Todavia estas enojado? Entonces, lo siento....voy a borrar lo que puse en la pagina de Esperanza. No quieres contestarme ya! Perdon, amigo...no puedes perdonarme? I don't have a dead key. so I can't add the missing accents (and doing those little letters under the edit box is really tiring?)....εγκυκλοπαίδεια* (talk) 16:53, 10 December 2005 (UTC) 00:57, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

Spanish

Well, yes I was a bit angry. Wanting to change something just because you think it's ugly doesn't come across as a particularly constructive argument (before you edited your comment you just said Spanish was ugly and did not elaborate). I'm all for people having their own opinions, but if something reads more like an attack rather than a rational argument you risk people getting mad at you. That's the reason why I said you should be more careful when saying such things.

Thank you for toning down your statement and the apology in my talk page. Efforts to mend fences are always appreciated here in the wiki and elsewhere. ¡Gracias! -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ | Esperanza 01:10, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

Wait a second, I never said I was trying to change the name of Esperanza to Esperança (Unless you are from Spain and you do the th for the "z" they sound pretty similar) I said I wanted to created a redirect (which I did) or an alternative name. I like the way "Esperança" looks. it is sort of a "statement." It wasn't an attack on Spanish, I love Spanish, god I am glad I speak it. I am starting a job in January as a Speech tutor in Spanish. I love speaking, but I just like the way Portuguese sounds. Do me one favor and just listen to it, it is like a heavenly dream...I know that sounds weird but I think it sounds much better than French. (How would you like Esperança to be called "espoir"). I hope you aren't still mad at me. There was something else I wanted to write but now I forgot. Puedes dejarme un mensaje en el español! 01:18, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
I am sorry, I don't have the best eyes...so I probably thought that "R" was a "B." God, you should put the native tag on your page....you speak better than complete native speakers here. Obrigado pelos mensagens! ....εγκυκλοπαίδεια* (talk) 01:45, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

Mexico

Well, yes, the islands do belong to the federation, but for example; Cozumel is an island in Mexico and is part of the state of Quintana Roo (Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico). ---> Sagitario 05:14, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

OK, i changed what i edited to Sates of Mexico (excluding THE islands), instead of THEIR. Here's the list of islands of Mexico here in Misplaced Pages... ---> Sagitario 14:32, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

Flag of Mexico

¡Saludos Rune.welsh! User Sagitario has been reverting the file of the Flag of Mexico to the one he uploaded and that presents a wrong green color, wrong aspect ratio and a poorly drawn coat of arms. He didn't care the file I uploaded is right according to the Mexican Constitution. He reverted the file several times in the past months showing that he doesn't care about accuracy. Then he stopped, I thought he understood but he came back and started doing the same thing.

Then I left a note in his discussion page asking him not to revert the file because the one he is using is wrong. He didn't listen. Instead he uploaded another file that is suppoused to be more accurate but that still presents a poorly drawn coat of arms with the wrong colors. Also he never cared about updating the file sources and information, he only reverted it and that was it.

This proves that the only thing he is looking for is displaying his own image file, no matter if there is another one more accurate. I called this "vandalism" cause I read that adding missinformation is a form of vandalism (Sneaky vandalism). I hope you can help me because I really don't know what to do to stop this. ¡Gracias! AlexCovarrubias 08:10, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

Hola de nuevo Rune. Yes, I'd like you to be a mediator in this issue. I hope we all can fix this problem. Thanks a lot for offering yourself to mediate. Another little thing, you say you don't know if the behaviour of this user should be considered vandalism, then how come he never uses the "Edit summary" option? He just keep reverting the file to the one he uploaded. Gracias. AlexCovarrubias 08:10, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

Hey Rune, i see that AlexCovarrubias has been "snitching" on me. Yeah, i admit, the first flag i had uploaded had a lighter green shade and a different aspect ratio, but i fixed it as soon as i realized it (if you look at my recent revert history, you'll see it's a more accurate one with the correct aspect ratio). However, he doesn't care and keeps reverting back to his. What i don't understand is why he acuses me of "vandalism" and adding "incorrect information". After all, it IS the Mexican flag. How is that incorrect? It's not like i'm replacing it with a flag of another country. ---> Sagitario 23:15, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

I really hope this issue is already solved. I only want to say something else about Sagitario's last comments. Sagitario, you reverted the file to that wrong one of yours several times in the past months (see history) without explaining why. Only a few days ago you "realized" your image was wrong and you uploaded a "most accurate" one. Ok, my question is why? The file I uploaded months ago was already right. In fact the work the author of the coat of arms did is one of a high quality. Why to upload a new version when the file was already right? And why did you keep reverting the file to that wrong one of yours in the first place? Even your "most accurate" image still presents wrong colors in the coat of arms not to mention it's poorly drawn. That's why I reverted it. The person that drawn the coat of arms of the version I uploaded is a mexican investigator of vexillology. He reproduced the image from the one stored in the Archivo General de la Nación (Nation's General Archive) according to the Law on Patriotic Symbols and he gentlely agreed to release it to the public domain to be used here in Misplaced Pages.
I don't know if you will stop reverting the file, as I said I hope this issue is already solved. I considered your behavior vandalism cause I read in the article that when you repetedely introduce incorrect information that's considered vandalism. Remember you kept reverting the file without explaining why. AlexCovarrubias 08:39, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

Friendly note from Esperanza election helper Ral315

You voted for Celestianpower and Titoxd for Administrator General. You did not, however, vote for them for Advisory Council. If this was a mistake, you can fix your votes any time between now and December 30. If this was not a mistake, please disregard this comment. Thanks, Ral315 (talk) 17:01, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

No problem. I just wanted to make sure you didn't miss it...I have a feeling we're going to have that problem a lot, since quite a few people are running for both positions. Ral315 (talk)

News from Esperanza

Hello, fellow Esperanzians! This is just a friendly reminder that elections for Administrator General and two advisory council positions have just begun. Voting will last until Friday, December 30, so make sure you exercise your right to vote! Also, I'm pleased to announce the creation of the Esperanza mailing list. I urge all members to join; see Misplaced Pages:Esperanza/Contact for more information. All you need to do is email me and I will activate your account. This will be a great way to relax, stay in touch, and hear important announcements. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?)

Inaccurate statement

On the Misplaced Pages:Featured_article_candidates/Redshift you imply that the FA nomination was made with a pending RfArb. Looking at the timestamps makes it clear that the RfArb was started after the FA nomination. Please edit your post. Thank you. --ScienceApologist 15:42, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

I'd wait a couple days to see the response, if you don't mind. Maybe the fact that is in FLC may get people interested in participating in the discussion. Esperanza elections

Thank you! :)

Thanks for voting for me in the Esperanza elections. I've been appointed to the Advisory Committee, thanks to your show of confidence in me. I'll do my best to make you proud, but please feel free to ask me for help at any time or to give me tips as to what you would like to do. Thanks for being an active member of Esperanza! Flag of Mexico

As for the heraldic description, there is no official version, but here is what I came up with, based from Flag of India and Heraldry: Party per pale Vert and Gules on a pale Argent a "Escudo Nacional Mexicano." This is not official, let alone, I do not think it is probably right. I will add it, but you can remove it if it is silly. Zach 02:50, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

One more thing, you asked if I can get my hands on ""La bandera mexicana: breve historia de su formacion y simbolismo" by Enrique Florescano (1998)." I went to Amazon and the book costs over 200 USD :'(. Zach 10:17, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
Another thing, you mentioned you wanted to have a full list of locations of the "Banderas monumentales." Well, you can do that at Banderas monumentales, since I created an article on that subject. Any input is welcome. Zach 10:02, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

We start as soon as you're ready! :) Titoxd 22:05, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Ok, here we go

Well, first off, Misplaced Pages is an encyclopedia before anything else, as you well know. So, it is a great advantage to have a few articles under your belt. Looking at your list of contributions, that part is impressive. You have a featured list, and your articles are quite good. So, you pass that criterion. :) Titoxd 22:54, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

And yes, this is a new program, so we don't really have much of a clue where to start... yet. ;) Sorry about that. Feel free to suggest things as to how we can improve, ok? Titoxd 22:57, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Ok, sorry for the delay, but real life strikes every once in a while... you asked to give you an example of admin activities. Well, let's start with rollbacking. It is just a tool for rapid reverting of vandalism, and ideally, you should exclusively just for that; you should not use it for editing issues (e.g. reverting POV, unless it is extremist in nature). Also, rollbacking your own edit when you just made a mistake is fine, but don't do it to other users unless they ask for it (usually this only happens while in IRC). In the case you run into a vandalbot, you can go to the user's Special:Contributions page and just revert all the edits that have the link in there.
Which brings us to blocking. Ideally, you should only use it to deal with vandalism, so we'll start with that first. Usually, for newbie tests and other minor things, you should use the {{test}} → {{test2}} → {{test3}} → {{test4}} → {{test5}} (block) sequence, but in cases where it is obvious it is a repeat vandal, or when the offender is committing obvious and severe vandalism, you are welcome to skip several steps, or optionally, {{bv}}'ing him and considering that as a {{test3}} or a {{test4}}, according to your judgment.
But we're in a world that's far from ideal, so there are other situations in which you can also engage in blocking. The most common of this is a 3RR breach. When you look for 3RR, remember that the first edit is not a revert; it is just an edit, and that you should not block for 3RR until the fourth revert has been done. If you do block someone for revert-warring, though, make sure to look at the behavior of the other side of the dispute. If the other side has broken the 3RR as well, block them too. If you see someone gaming the 3RR (as in making the fourth revert just after 24 hours from the first), you should use your judgment and decide to block them or not.
Another blockable offense is disruption, and that is a blurry line, as well as blocking for personal attacks (which is considered disruption if it becomes too severe). These are almost always controversial, so it is best to ask first and shoot later, instead of the other way around. If you're thinking about blocking an editor for this, I recommend going to WP:AN/I and asking there first. But never, ever block a user you're engaged in a dispute with.
As for page protection, there are two simple rules: don't edit it afterwards, and don't protect it if you're involved in an edit war there. The way to do it is simple: click on the "protect" tab above (which is visible only to admins), then add a {{vprotect}}, {{protect}}, {{sprotect}} or another tag, whichever you consider most appropriate. As for semi-protecting pages, you can do it when they are being heavily vandalized, and most of the vandalism is coming from anonymous editors (perennial example: George W. Bush). Also, there's two other things you should remember: you should protect for a short period of time, but leaving pages protected indefinitely is harmful, and don't protect the Featured Article.
This leaves deletion policy to cover, but that is a lecture longer than this one by itself... :P Any questions? Titoxd 03:44, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas

Hi! I hesitated ages on writing that one on el inge Cuauhtémoc. I got it from a very good source; an 80 year old aunt who lived in Zinapécuaro at the time. My granddad (my aunt's brother) was also a good friend of El General. But you're right, I agree it's too bold a claim and it really doesn't add much to the article. It's one of those things that's mentioned in family conversations and probably should stay there too!

Schicchi 15:05, 6 January 2006 (UTC) Esperanza, you're right, it is an interesting thing to know, and perhaps it explains Cuauhtémoc's darker skin against his mom and dad's (nothing wrong with that of course!). BTW, can we do something with AMLO's page? It is definitively POV! I guess that happens with all controversial public figures. However if someone in the US were to read the article and compare it with newspaper articles (other than La Jornada) he would think the article is propaganda.

Schicchi 16:08, 6 January 2006 (UTC) I will try to join the ranks of AMLO's page watchers... but for now I've got to earn a living! =)

Armenian History

Greetings.

By far the best objective (though outdated in certain areas) version online is Vahan M. Kurkjian's A History of Armeniacompiled and edited by Wiki user Bill Thayer.

For a much more simple summary check out: http://www.armenianhistory.info/origins.htm

This one is pretty good as well: http://www.armenica.org/

There's also this: http://www.hyeetch.nareg.com.au/armenians/history_p1.html

For an extremely ethnocentric Armenian view without a drop of objectivity: http://www.armenianhighland.com/

This is a pretty basic intro book: Armenia : A Historical Atlas by Robert H. Hewsen (very well researched and referenced scholarly work) --Eupator 02:32, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

AMLO

Hello Rune, I will add Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's article to my watchlist.

Its sad that morons are making good wikipedians to give up on certain articles or even leave as Hajor did.

Fortunatetly we are still many and some others are joining like Sagitario, Zscout370, Instinkt...etc Also, for this type of problems I think that we should involve Spangineer and/or Drini, they both are admins. (Actually i have already post a comment on drini's talk page about this).

What's wrong with campaigning?

I saw to my disappointment that you switched from support to oppose on my RfA because of "campaigning". I wonder if you could tell me why you feel that way. I do not understand why you feel it is a bad thing, if it is cordial and professional. Obviously, people voting "oppose" out of some clear and/or strong motivation aren't going to change in any case, but I'm not sure I see why you find it objectionable for me to ask folks who had voted oppose to take a more careful look at my history. I've certainly done that in several cases; you can easily check the details in my edit history. Basically, where oppose votes stated that they were voting "me too" on a couple rather old and rather minor issues that some early oppose voters had stated, I've asked editors if they'd be willing to take a closer look. Some have, some haven't; but the whole thing just seems like sort of an extension of normal editorial cooperation.

Oh well. I suppose I'll probably be mop-free for a while at least. Which is fine. I suppose I'm more worried about the idea that the reasons will be venal, or show a poor process, than I actually am with havng a few more buttons and screen enabled during my WP editing. Principles and all that (the same thing as refusing to dissimulate on my attitude towards WP:AUTO; I'm sure if I had falsely confessed my sins about it, a half dozen of the opposes would change... but that would show bad faith, so I strongly state my unwillingness to enunciate that).

All the best, Lulu of the Lotus-Eaters 03:18, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

Proceeding to nominate Lulu regardless of him asking to hold on for a while reflects on the whole debacle, methinks.
Well, OK, let's stipulate that Jossi acted slightly impulsively in nominating me. And perhaps I also acted too impulsively in accepting the nomination at this time. Nonetheless, even assuming that, doesn't it seem a little silly to vote on an RfA on such a basis... rather than, say, based on whether the candidate really would make a good and useful administrator (which I would; though I'll also continue to be a good editor even if promotion is declined). For that matter, the "campaigning" issues seems to be similar: even if I was wrong to contact voters, do you actually think that means I would be less good as an administrator? Voting on any other basis than that one question just seems to wrong to me. Lulu of the Lotus-Eaters 20:55, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

DB query

Regarding the Special:Uncategorizedpages query... sorry for delaying. It looks like someone else is interested in the data as well. I can generate it no problem, I just have a few questions about exactly what's needed. If you could comment on my talk page, that'd be great. Thanks. --Interiot 06:44, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

Military history of Mexico

I left responses on that talk page, I have so many affairs in the real world, but I will get around to it. Even if I have to take info off other articles. Thank you for all your concern. I really wish I could say that I created a FA. εγκυκλοπαίδεια* 16:46, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
