Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai is the story of a young couple, Naitik and Akshara Singhania, who live in a Marwari joint family in Udaipur. The story showcases their journey first as a married couple going through adjustment issues, then as parents of young children and how they learn to love each other and their respective extended families while becoming mature members of their household. Over the course of the series, Akshara and Naitik have a baby boy called Naksh.
- 4 years leap
Naksh is a kid now The family experienced happiness and sadness together. The family went for a trip, but during the trip, Gayatri had an accident and died. After their marriage, they are now focusing on their children, Naksh and Naira. Dadaji (grandfather) suddenly dies from a heart attack. Bhabhima blames Akshara and throws her out of the house.
- 10 years leap
After a leap it shows Naksh as a sensible grown-up and Naira as a diva teenager. Akshara, Naitik, Naksh and Naira live in Cape Town. Naksh returns to Udaipur. He tries to clear the misunderstandings of Bhabimaa. After many days, Akshara is forgiven and is back in the house. Then it shows the family's happiness. The story then focuses on Naksh. It shows how Naksh falls in love with Tara and their marriage celebrations are also shown, but just minute before the marriage she breaks up with him.
- 7 years leap
The show takes another leap which focuses on teenager Naira, who flees from her house and lives in Rishikesh having hatred on mother, Akshara. After finding Naira, the story takes a new twist, creating a love triangle between Kartik, Naitik's employee, Naira and Gayatri, Naitik's niece. Naira and Kartik have feelings for each other, unaware that it is love and Gayu has a one sided love for Kartik, unaware of the fact that Kartik doesn't love her at all. When Kartik proposes Naira, she initiaaly rejects but by the time she realises that she also loves him, she thinks of sacrificing knowing that Gayu loves him. But later when Mishti revealsto everyone that Kartik loves only Naira Kartik and Naira confess their love for each other and Gayu also understands. Kartik doesn't want to talk about his family as he hates them. Meanwhile, on Akshara's birthday, everyone go for a veneration, but apparently Akshara dies in a car accident. Singhanias blame Kartik for Akshara's death as Kartik was found in a drunk and injured state at the accident spot. At this time Kartik's family "The Goenkas" shows up and supports Kartik. Later, Naira finds that Kartik is not the culprit and it is someone else. Naira proves Kartik's innocence by finding the real culprit. Kartik doesn't like Manish (his dad) and Swarna(his step mom) as he thinks they were responsible for his mother's death. Seeing Kartik's inclination towards Singhanias, his family approve of their relationship in spite of not being much in favor of it.
- Few months later
The two families start making preparations for their marriage. Naira enters unexpectedly into Goenka house during Tilak ceremony (which is supposed to be inauspicious before marriage) for which Karthik's Dadi demands Naira's name to be changed as solution. Just before wedding, Kartik comes to know that his cousin Mansi is the real culprit who ran Akshara over and is desperate to tell the truth to Naira but his uncle Akhilesh convinces him that he will tell and but he tells Naira only that he is upset as he is missing his mother. Finally the wedding takes place. The present track is all about the situations after their marriage. Just one day after marriage, Kartik comes to know about the promise Naira did to Suwarna before marriage that she will try to make Kartik stay in Goenka house forever. So he immediately leaves with Naira to stay in a separate flat though Naira is not happy with it. After Naira is injured by robbers that broke into the flat, she and Karthik move back into the Goenka home. Naira meets the man whose brother is in jail for killing her mother and learns that Akshara's accident was caused by Mansi, Karthik's sister. The news reaches the Singhanias and they are heartbroken. The Goenkas come to apologize. Naira is initially very much hurt and angry on Karthik but later understands that it's not his mistake. She takes Akshara's accident case back and forgives Mansi. On Karthik's birthday, he comes to know that Aditya tortures Keerthi and along with Naira decides to expose him.
Parallel story arcs
In parallel to Akshara and Naitik's stories, the stories of their respective siblings also form significant story arcs in the series. The past plots have been built around the lives of Naitik's sisters Nandini and Rashmi. The series has also focused on Naitik's step-siblings. The series has continuously paralleled the story of Akshara-Naitik with that of Varsha-Shaurya. Varsha is Akshara's best friend and Shaurya is her older brother. The shows also focus on Naksh (2015–2016), Kartik (2016–), Naira (2016–), Gayatri "Gayu" Deora (2016–) & Tara (2015–2016). Naksh is Naitik & Akshara's son, Gayu, is Nikhil-Rashmi's daughter (Sameer's stepdaughter). Naira is the youngest child and only daughter of Akshara and Naitik, now the main female lead of the show. Kartik is Naitik's employee and Naira's love interest, the new lead of the show along with Naira. Tara was Naksh's fiancée until she leaves him.
