Background

Project history

In 1997, director Ridley Scott was attached to the project with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role. However, Warner Bros. dropped the project due to a budget that escalated to $108 million. In 2002, director Michael Bay was attached to the project with Will Smith in the lead role, but the project failed to advance. In fall of 2005, the project regained momentum with director Francis Lawrence at the helm.

Production

For the adaptation, an original script by Mark Protosevich, based on Richard Matheson's 1954 novel I Am Legend, was rewritten by Akiva Goldsman. Warner Bros. has also pursued a deal to film in the Kingsbridge Armory in New York for seven months at the cost of $350,000. Shooting began on September 23, 2006 and wraps up on March 31, 2007.

The movie is filmed in New York City. On October 16-17, 2006, it was on location in the Hugo Boss store in Manhattan, on Fifth Avenue and 55th Street. Will Smith could be seen brandishing an M-16.
