High Island, New York
High Island is a small island next to City Island, Bronx, New York.
It is connected to City Island by a small private bridge and a permanent sandbar that emerges at low tide.
It has two AM Radio Stations sharing both transmitting towers.
One radio station is WCBS Newsradio 88 AM (CBS) 880 Khz and the other is WFAN Sportsradio 66 AM (NBC) 660 Khz in New York City.
The tallest of the transmitter towers is 549 feet and WCBS/WFAN has applied to raise the eastern tower which is only half the height to 549 feet also. The local community of City Island is opposed to any further such improvements and are worried about getting Cancer from the Radio Frequency Energy, which is strong enough to power a small flashlight! The case is in litigation.
It was a privately owned island with Summer Rental Cottages and a Lifesaving Station before it was puchased in the late 1950's.
The island is not inhabited, but workers are there 24 hours a day.
High Island has a small swamp on it's southwest side.
The island is mostly an outcrop of bedrock with many trees.
It is privately owned by Time Warner Inc. and a Restricted Area.
130 years ago it was called Spectacle Island.
