Providence Catholic High School is located in New Lenox, Illinois.

Providence Catholic is a private school run by the Augustinians. Neighboring schools in New Lenox include Lincoln Way East and Lincoln Way Central. The president of Providence is Father Richard McGrath, with Mr. Don Sebestyen as its principal.

The academic policy of Providence Catholic is one that is very highly regarded. Their grading scale runs differently than that of neighboring high schools. Also, it is a college prep high school, which in itself has its pros and cons. Since it is a college prep school, the education you receive is one that meets the requirements that almost any college would require. This also means that certain courses provided at public schools are not available, such as cooking, auto mechanics, sewing, etc.

Besides academics, Providence is known for excelling at sports. They have a total of 24 state championships in sports including; wrestling, football, girls track, baseball, cheerleading and boys basketball. This is more than any other private school in the state of Illinois. Besides achieving this feat, their wrestling team has 6 consecutive state championships from 1997-2002 making it the first Illinois wrestling team to ever achieve this goal. Matt Seffner was the head football coach from 1968 to 2005 and also holds the record for most wins as a football coach in Illinois.

The Teaching of an Augustinian School

As part of the Order that traces its origins back to St Augustine, the College promotes his ideal of community where the members are ‘of one mind and heart on the way towards God’. Augustine taught foundationally on the subject of free will, and unity of mind and heart is sought through free assent.

Education in the Augustinian tradition is concerned with building a firm foundation of knowledge for personal and spiritual life as well as a basis for professional or work life. St Augustine speaks about the teacher within who can test the truth of what is being taught. This teacher is the presence of God within the person. Processes of contemplation, interior reflection and evaluation are also taught as part of this. As a consequence of this, an Augustinian education also seeks a balance in learning between different kinds of subjects, whether humanities or sciences, career oriented or focussed on spiritual, personal and interpersonal growth. The Augustinian approach is a broad and inclusive one.

The ultimate Augustinian ideal is one of self-directed right behaviour; of ‘free people acting under the influence of grace, rather than slaves under the law.’

The Augustinians in North America

The North American foundation of the order happened in 1796 when Irish friars founded Olde St. Augustine's Church in Philadelphia. Michael Hurley was the first American to join the Order the following year. Friars established schools, Universities and other works throughout the Americas, including Villanova University (1842) in Philadelphia (USA) and Merrimack College (1947, USA). While Malvern Preparatory School was founded in 1842 alongside the University, by 1909 two Augustinian houses and a school had been established in Chicago, 1922 in San Diego, by 1925 a school in Ojai and Los Angeles; 1926 a school in Oklahoma; in 1947 a college in Massachusetts; in 1953 a school in Pennsylvania; 1959 a school in New Jersey; in 1961 a school in Massachusetts; and in 1962 this school in Illinois and a school in Pennsylvania. The Augustinian Recollects are also present in the U.S.A.
