Yoel Adler was a 46-year-old right wing extremist in the summer of 1990 when he was arrested by in Israel on suspicion tha the was the individual behing a series of vandalism incidents on Palestinians and left-wing Israelis committed since January 1989, and of the murder of a Palestinian. He had claimed to be the leader of a group, the Sicarii, named for the Sicarii, a group of Jewish zealots who opposed Roman occupation of Judea, and stabbed people that collaborated with the Romans.

Adler is thought to have been responsible for a number of arsons and graffiti attacks on leftist Jewish political figures considered sympathetic to the plight of Palestinians. He claimed responsibility for the shooting by a lone gunman of four Arabs outside Jerusalem's walled old city on April 10, 1989.
