Genealogical records suggest their closest common ancestor was Gerberga of Saxony: Baldwin II descended from her first marriage to Gilbert, Duke of Lorraine, while the Boulogne brothers descended from her second marriage to Louis IV of France. It must also be noted that the same records also suggest that both the paternal grandmother of the Boulogne brothers, Matilda of Leuven, and the paternal grandmother of Baldwin II, Judith of Roucy, descended from the House of Reginar.
